Who Builds Toshiba and Shibaura Machines

Both nameplates come from one Japanese company, today Shibaura Machine Co., Ltd., with headquarters in Tokyo and Numazu. It was founded in December 1938 as the Shibaura Machine Tool Co., with Kametaro Fujishima as a key figure, and set up again as Shibaura Machine Works Co. in March 1949. In June 1961 it became Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd., and in April 2020 it went back to a Shibaura name as Shibaura Machine Co., Ltd.

As a rough guide, then, a Toshiba Machine plate points to a machine built between the 1961 and 2020 name changes, and a Shibaura Machine plate to one built after April 2020 or, on a very old machine, before 1961.

Plants, the US Company and the Other Product Lines

In Japan, Shibaura Machine builds at its Numazu plant, at Sagami, established in 1964, and at Gotemba, established in 1987, and among its overseas sites it lists plants in Shanghai and Chennai. Its US company goes back to April 1974, when Toshiba Machine Co. America was established.

Machine tools are one line among several. The company's principal products also include injection molding, die casting and extrusion machines and industrial robots, which is why the same plate turns up on plastics and casting equipment as well as on boring mills and vertical lathes.

Shibaura Machine's current machine tool line-up by series, grouped the way the maker groups it. Some designations seen on used machines, such as BP, are not in this current list:

TOSNUC Controls and Parts Support

Shibaura calls TOSNUC its own NC system, used on its machines for many years, and support for the older series is winding down. In October 2022 it said that the servo motors for the TOSNUC-800 and TOSNUC-777.2 controllers were out of production and the encoder maker was stopping too, so it would end service support for the related parts by the end of December 2025. In January 2024 it added that the IC chips on the core circuit boards of the TOSNUC-600, 777, 777.2, 800 and 888 series had been discontinued.

That shapes the offer on a used Toshiba. A machine still running one of those controls is valued with the parts outlook in mind, while one that has had an NC replacement under Shibaura's retrofit program, which also covers overhauls, repairs and precision adjustment, is a different proposition. Shibaura Service, or Selling Outright

In April 2024 Shibaura Machine handed its main machine tool after-sales service business to a group company, Shibaura Machine Engineering Co., Ltd. The service side supplies parts and tooling, regrinds worn spindle taper holes, updates spindle drive systems and oil coolers, and gives guidance on NC programming and operation.

That is the route for a boring mill you plan to keep in production. If it is leaving, we buy it as it stands, and a record of a taper regrind or a drive update is worth passing along with the details.

What Is in the Toshiba Listings We Hold

Our Toshiba hub holds 1,961 listings, and the typed categories inside it lean toward heavy iron. Boring accounts for 371 rows: 295 CNC boring mills, 36 horizontal boring mills, 28 more filed as HBM and 12 vertical boring mills. Machining and milling run 232 rows, led by 72 horizontal machining centers, 71 gantry and portal mills and 65 vertical machining centers. Turning adds 170, of which 131 are CNC lathes and 32 are vertical turret lathes. Plastics and casting equipment covers another 137 rows, drives and motors 73, automation and pallet systems 25, grinding 20 and robots 10. A further 786 listings carry only the general metal cutting label and 97 sit under miscellaneous machines, so read the counts above as typed rows, not a breakdown of the whole hub. Across the hub we carry 1,521 distinct model designations, and the listings that record a build year run from 1969 to 2025.

BTD, BP and BF: The Toshiba Boring Mill Lines

Three boring lines carry most of the weight here. BTD, Shibaura's table-type horizontal boring and milling line, is the largest model family in the hub at 152 listings. BTD-110R16 is the most common single model string we hold at 16 listings, followed inside the BTD line by BTD-200QF, BTD-110 and BTD-11B at seven each, then BTD-110H, BTD 13F R22, BTD 200QH, BTD-130H.R22 and BTD-200QE. BP is second at 71 listings, with BP-150, BP-150.R22, BP-13B-P7, BP-130-R22, BP-110 and BP-13 all present. BF, the floor-type line, runs 30 listings including BF-130A, BF 130B and BF-130B. Alongside those three you will also see BT, BTH, BFT and BSF designations in these listings, at 29, 24, 22 and nine respectively. If the plate on your machine reads something outside the three named lines, send it anyway. At 371 rows, boring is the largest machine type in this hub, and it is the equipment we chase hardest.

BMC, MPF and MPC Machining Centers, TUE Vertical Lathes

On the milling side, BMC is the horizontal machining center line and the third largest family in the hub at 62 listings, with BMC-800, BMC-100E, BMC63 and BMC-1000 among the strings we hold. MPF, a double-column line where five-sided machining comes with an optional attachment, runs 34 listings including MPF-2140, and MPC, Shibaura's planomiller-type double-column line, runs 44. MPH double column machining centers are present at five listings, so ask rather than assume one is sitting on our floor. Turning is anchored by TUE vertical turning lathes at 47 listings, where TUE-15, TUE 150 and TUE 20 are the most common strings, plus TSS in the same vertical lathe group at 14. TEM, TMD, TXN, TX, MPE, TUD, KRT and KWA also appear as designations across these listings. The category rows on the milling and turning side: 131 CNC lathes, 72 horizontal machining centers, 71 gantry and portal mills, 65 vertical machining centers and 32 vertical turret lathes.

Toshiba Machine, Shibaura Machine, and the Name on the Plate

Toshiba Machine Co. changed its name to Shibaura Machine Co., Ltd. in April 2020, going back to the Shibaura name it was founded under in 1938. The machines and the product lines did not change, and we buy from both eras, so a nameplate reading Shibaura Machine and one reading Toshiba Machine get the same treatment here. Our own catalog shows the split, with SHIBAURA leading 13 listings and TOSHIBA leading 12. It also shows how loosely these designations get written down. BTD-110R16, BTD110R16 and plain 110R16 are three spellings of one designation sitting in our data. So are TUE-15, TUE 15 and TUE15. BF-130B and BF 130B appear both ways, as do BTD-110 and BTD110, BTH-110 and BTH110, BMC-800 and BMC800. Suffixes add more variation still: BTD-130H.R22, BP-150.R22, BP-130-R22 and BTD 13F R22. That variance is a spelling problem rather than a supply problem, and it is why we ask for the plate string character for character instead of a cleaned up version of what is stamped there.

Injection Molding, Die Casting and Extrusion Under the Toshiba Plate

Toshiba is not only a metal cutting nameplate, and the plastics side of this hub is the part most brand pages skip entirely. We hold 124 injection molding rows, 111 of them filed as CNC injection molding machines and 13 as injection molding machines. Die casting adds eight rows, seven plus one more carrying the CNC label, and there are five CNC extruders. Together, plastics and casting equipment accounts for 137 listings under the Toshiba plate.
