Toshiba TUD-16
Manufacturer specifications, what it is built to do, the years we have seen them listed, what tooling fits, and what to check on one. MTE also buys them outright.
What the Toshiba TUD-16 is
The Toshiba TUD-16 is a CNC vertical boring and turning mill — a machine for turning and boring large-diameter, short work on a horizontal rotary table — rings, hubs, casings and flanges too big or too heavy to hang off a horizontal lathe. The manufacturer publishes a max turning diameter of 78.7 in (2,000 mm).
What it is built to do
From the figures the manufacturer publishes, a Toshiba TUD-16 suits:
- workpieces up to the published 22,000 lb (10,000 kg), which on a machine this size is usually the binding constraint rather than the travels
A note on the name. Toshiba Machine Co. renamed itself Shibaura Machine Co. on 1 April 2020, so the manufacturer’s own specification for this machine is published under Shibaura Machine even though the machine, the nameplate and the way everyone in the trade refers to it all still say Toshiba.
Selling a used Toshiba TUD-16
Before the tooling goes into a listing, pull one holder and read its taper. Shibaura's Japanese page for the TUD series puts an ISO No. 55 taper 7/24 on the ram, held by a collet-type pull-stud mechanism, while the 2020 American spec page for the TUD-16 lists a 7/24 taper No. 50 shank. Write down the size you find and the pull stud type, so nobody quotes holders for the wrong ram.
Shibaura offered an automatic tool changer and an automatic pallet changer for the TUD series as special options. If this unit has the pallet changer, list the pallets that go with it; the maker notes that on an APC machine the jaws built into each pallet do the job of the chuck. If it has the tool changer, the 2020 spec sheet gives its pod as 12 tools, so count the pockets that are filled.
The crossrail is not set by the CNC. A hydraulic cylinder steps it up and down in 250 mm (9.84 in) moves, to a maximum of 500 mm (19.6 in) on this size, while the TUD-20 gets 750 mm (29.5 in). Those steps are how the mill takes work of different heights under the ram, so record the step the arm normally sits at and the tallest part the shop has run.
Four independent manual jaws came as standard, each weighing 28 kg (61.6 lbs) and clamping up to 4 metric tons (8,800 lbs). The standard list also includes a set of special service tools, installation parts, a telescopic crossrail slide cover and an automatic power OFF device. Gather the jaws and the tool set in one place and say in writing which items are still with the mill.
Tool change and tool nose measurement on this control run through custom macros: Shibaura's page names M06, M55, M60, M80, M81, M83 and M84 as the M codes that call them. Back up those macros and the parameters onto a memory card before the control is switched off for the last time in your shop, because M06, the tool change, is one of them.
Three entries on the 2020 option list change what a given TUD-16 is: scale feedback on the X and Z axes and the C rotary axis, a rotary conveyor arranged around the table with a 1.0 HP (0.75 kW) motor, and Renishaw probes for the part and for tool length. Note which of them this unit carries.

What fits a Toshiba TUD-16
Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.
50-taper toolholders
This is a 50-taper spindle — the 7:24 steep taper that CAT-50, BT-50 and DIN 69871 (SK-50) holders all share. They share the taper and nothing else that matters: the retention knob and the flange form differ between those standards, so holders do not swap between them without changing pull studs. Knowing which standard a machine was tooled for is worth doing before the holders are packed.

What years the Toshiba TUD-16 was built
The 2 units we have seen listed were all 1992. Observed across 25 marketplaces, not a manufacturer build record. The manufacturer specifies FANUC 31iB, so a unit on an older control is an early one or a retrofit.
Toshiba TUD-16 machines on the market now
We track listings across 25 used-machinery marketplaces, and every competitor in this market is one of them, so this is a view none of them can produce for themselves. Right now there are 2 units of this exact designation on the market, drawn from 2 independent sources. That is a thin market for this designation, which usually works in a seller’s favor.
We count only listings whose model is spelled as this machine’s own designation. Near spellings that may be a different variant are excluded rather than counted, so this is a floor on what is out there, not a total.
What affects the value of a used Toshiba TUD-16
- Control. The manufacturer specifies FANUC 31iB.
- Against the published figures. The manufacturer gives max spindle speed 350 rpm (table), spindle motor power AC 30/20 HP, 30 ~ 3,000 rpm (live spindle head), tool capacity 12 tools and max turning diameter 78.7 in (2,000 mm).
What to check on a Toshiba TUD-16
The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.
- Table gear steps. Shibaura drives the table through a two-step gear speed-change motor and a helical gear under the table, with a 2-stage hydraulic shift. Run the table in both steps up to its 350 rpm top speed and see that each shift goes through without a clunk or an alarm.
- Tool clamp in the ram. The ram clamps its tools automatically with 6 metric tons of force. Load and release a holder a few times and confirm it seats and pulls up the same way each time.
- Every crossrail step. The crossrail step-positioning unit is on the standard list. Move the arm through each 250 mm step and back, and note any step where it stops short or throws an alarm.
- Jaws and T-slots. The table carries four manual jaws and T-slots that guide and hold the work. Turn each jaw screw through its full travel and look along the slots; a jaw that binds or a cracked slot is worth stating up front.
- Pendant and handwheel. The pendant carries the table, feed direction and mode controls, overrides for feed rate and table speed, and a manual pulse generator. Try each switch and turn the handwheel on both axes and write down any that does nothing.
- Slideway lube and table oil. An automatic slideway lubricating unit and a table lubricant oil cooling unit are both on the standard list. Check that each one runs and that the lube reservoir is filled.
