What the Okuma IMPACT LU-15 is
The Okuma IMPACT LU-15 is a CNC turning center — a machine for turning round parts between a chuck and, where fitted, a tailstock — shafts, flanges, housings and bar work. The manufacturer publishes a max turning diameter of 14.17 in / 360 mm.
Selling a used Okuma IMPACT LU-15
Okuma's 2002 LU series profile shows the LU15 as a four-axis lathe with two independent turrets, and then four more versions of it: M, with a full C axis, mill-drill tools and synchronized tapping; MY, which adds a Y axis to that; W, with a sub-spindle; and MW, which joins the sub-spindle to the milling tools. Copy the version letters from the plate exactly as stamped, because each one changes what the lathe can make.
That profile lists the LU15 as a 350 T, a 600 C or a 1000 C machine, where T stands for the chucker version and C for between centers. Record the figure and the letter from the plate, and on a C machine say whether the tailstock is still fitted, since a buyer sizes the lathe from those two marks.
The LU15's own 2001 page at okuma.com gives its turret type as V12 & V8 and rates the spindle motor at VAC 30/20 hp, or 22/15 kW. Count the stations on each turret, note any that sit empty, and list the holders that go with each one, because a two-turret lathe without its holders is only half a setup.
The profile calls the OSP-E100L the new CNC across the LU line, so an LU15 built before it came in may run an earlier OSP control. Its list for that control includes 3D color graphic simulation, absolute position encoders, mid-auto manual functions and thread restart, with interactive programming marked as available. Record which control the cabinet plate names and which of those functions this machine actually has.

What the Okuma IMPACT LU-15 is used for
Okuma's 2002 LU series profile names the work each LU15 version adds: drilled, milled and tapped features with a full C axis on the M version, off-center side holes, Y-axis milling and keyways cut in several passes on the MY version, and both ends of a part finished on the W sub-spindle version.

- Build year. The units we tracked were built from 1995 to 2017, across 6 model years.
- Against the published figures. The manufacturer gives max spindle speed 4,500, spindle motor power VAC 30 / 20 hp (= VAC 22 / 15 kW), max turning diameter 14.17 in / 360 mm and max turning length 23.62 in / 600 mm.
What to check on an Okuma IMPACT LU-15
The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.
- Sub-spindle hand-off. For the W versions the profile lists W-axis part transfer and finishing both ends, and the MW adds a full C axis and mill-drill-tap on both spindles. Pass a part from the main spindle to the sub-spindle under a program and see it seat in the second chuck.
- Driven tools on an M. The Multifunction row for the LU15 shows 4,500 min-1, 5 hp and M12 P1.5 beside synchronized tapping. Turn the driven tools through their speed range and tap a test hole in scrap to show the spindle and the tool stay in step.
- Y stroke on an MY. Okuma lists the MY's Y axis at a 4.72 in stroke, from +2.76 in to -1.97 in. Jog Y to each end and compare the readout with those two figures.
- Both turrets in the cut. The control list names independent turret operation, with one part program running the machine. Run a program that has both turrets cutting together and watch that neither one sits waiting on the other.
- Spindle held at 4,500 rpm. That 2001 okuma.com page puts the maximum spindle speed at 4,500 rpm. Hold the main spindle there for several minutes, then note any heat at the nose or change in sound.
- The original equipment proposal. Okuma's profile says its specifications can change and points to the formal equipment proposal for what each machine included. If that proposal or the order paperwork is still in the files, scan it, because it settles which version and options this unit left the factory with.
- Thread restart. Restart functions, thread restart among them, are on the control list. If the shop has used it, show a buyer a restart partway through a threading cycle.
