What the Doosan PUMA 400LC is
The Doosan PUMA 400LC is a CNC turning center — a machine for turning round parts between a chuck and, where fitted, a tailstock — shafts, flanges, housings and bar work. The manufacturer publishes a max turning diameter of 550 (21.7). This one is specified with bar work: a bar feeder can run stock through the spindle.

Selling a used Doosan PUMA 400LC
Doosan's brochure for the PUMA 400 series lists its builds by letter, and the 400LC sits with the long-bed models: 2155 mm (84.8 in) of Z travel, against 1105 mm on the standard bed and 3150 mm on the XL. In the same tables the C builds take a 530 mm (20.9 in) chuck on an A1-15 nose. Copy the full model name and serial number from the plate, because an LMC or an XLC is a different machine.
The plain LC is a two-axis lathe. The brochure marks the C axis as M type only, and it offers Preci-Flex ready rotary tool holders on the milling versions alone. If a 400LC has been described anywhere with live tooling, look at the plate again before the description goes out.
Two gearboxes were offered on this model. The isolated DI gearbox, a two speed unit kept apart from the spindle to stop heat and vibration passing into it, is standard on the LC, and the 2-step Baruffaldi gearbox is listed as an option for it. Record which one the lathe has; the brochure's outline drawings give separate dimensions for an LC with each.
Doosan gave two control choices for the series, a Fanuc 32i-A and a Doosan Fanuc i series, and its option list also names a Fanuc 31i-A controller. The brochure tabulates different program storage figures for the two standard controls, so take a picture of the system information page and note which one is fitted.
The standard feature list covers a hydraulic chuck and actuating cylinder, soft jaws, a live center, a foot switch, leveling jack screws and plates, a hand tool kit and a standard tooling kit of tool holders and boring sleeves. Doosan's tooling chart counts what that kit holds for the 10-station turret on the C builds, so set aside whatever is left of it to go with the lathe.
One 400LC can differ from the next by its options, and the brochure's list includes a programmable tailstock, a hydraulic or manual steady rest, a bar feeder interface, a chip conveyor, an oil skimmer, dual chucking pressure, an automatic measuring system with a touch probe, and an automatic tool setter whose arm is driven by an electric motor. List each one on the machine by name.
For the buyer, the brochure describes a true 45 degree slant bed cast in one piece. Its wide rectangular guideways are induction hardened and ground, and Rulon 142 is bonded to the mating surfaces and hand scraped. The turret indexes in both directions and locks on a large diameter Curvic coupling with hydraulic clamp force.

What to check on a Doosan PUMA 400LC
The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.
- Both gear ranges. Power reaches the spindle through a two speed gearbox. Run the spindle in low and high range up to its 1500 r/min top speed and listen for gear noise at the change.
- Turret clamp and wedges. A hydraulic index motor controls the turret's rotation, deceleration and clamp, and wedge clamps hold the turning tools. Index through all 10 stations in both directions and check that each wedge clamp holds.
- Tailstock quill. The tailstock has a 120 mm (4.7 in) quill with a Morse Taper #6 live center, and the quill stroke runs from the program or a foot switch. Run it both ways from each and see that oil reaches the quill, which is on the automatic lube circuit.
- Way lube reservoir. Metered lube feeds every guideway, the ball screws and the quill from a 1.8 L (0.5 gallon) reservoir that Doosan says lasts up to 80 hours, and a low level alarm blocks a restart without oil. Note how often the shop has been refilling it.
- Hydraulic oil cooler. A cooling system regulates the temperature of the hydraulic oil. Run the lathe until it is warm, then read the hydraulic unit's gauge and confirm the cooler is running.
- Long-bed coolant tank. The long bed takes a separate 370 L (97.8 gallon) coolant tank and chip pan. Drain it, look at the floor of the tank for sludge, and note whether the pump holds pressure.
- Crash history. Electric torque limiters guard each axis ball screw and stop the machine on impact. Ask whether the lathe has had a crash that tripped one, and keep any repair record from after it with the papers.
