What the DMG MORI NLX 2500SY is
The DMG MORI NLX 2500SY is a CNC turning center — a machine for turning round parts between a chuck and, where fitted, a tailstock — shafts, flanges, housings and bar work. The manufacturer publishes a max turning diameter of 460 mm (18.1 in.). This one is specified with a Y axis and bar work: off-center milling without a second setup; a bar feeder can run stock through the spindle.

Selling a used DMG MORI NLX 2500SY
Mori Seiki's 2013 NLX series page lists the NLX2500 in MC, Y, SY and SMC builds on a /1250 bed, and the same four plus a base lathe on a /700 bed. Only the SY column carries both a Y-axis stroke and a travel figure for spindle 2. Read the full designation and the bed number from the nameplate first, since a 700 and a 1250 are different machines to anyone shopping for one.
Spindle 2 on the SY moves on its own B axis. That table gives it 734 mm (28.9 in.) of travel on the /700 and 1,284 mm (50.6 in.) on the /1250. On the longer bed, spindle 2 turns 6,000 min-1, and a bracketed option drops it to 5,000 min-1 with a 73 mm (2.8 in.) through-hole. Measure the bore of each spindle and put both figures in the description.
Turning diameter is not the same across the builds. Mori Seiki gave the base NLX2500/700 a maximum turning diameter of 460 mm, while the SY and the other milling versions are listed at 366 mm (14.4 in.) with a 35 mm overhang O.D. tool, or 356 mm with a 40 mm overhang. Turning length for the SY is 705 mm on the /700 and 1,255 mm on the /1250.
Several options change what a given SY can hold. Spindle 1 is rated 4,000 min-1, and the /1250 list also brackets a 2,500 min-1 spindle with a 111 mm (4.3 in.) through-hole. The chuck is 10 inch with 12 inch as an option. On the /1250 list rotary tools turn 6,000 min-1, or 10,000 min-1 on the optional drive, so record which spindle, chuck and tool drive this unit has.
DMG MORI's present NLX 2500 page describes the current build, not an early SY. It lists MAPPS on Mitsubishi as the control, with MAPPS V on FANUC, SIEMENS SINUMERIK 840d solutionline and MAPPS X with the CELOS X platform in its control section. Photograph the control maker's plate and the software version screen so the person taking the lathe knows which of these it runs.
Automation on that page centers on the GX 10 T gantry loader shown on an NLX 2500, the Robo2Go Turning cell with a left-hand layout for turret lathes such as the NLX, and the MATRIS robot system, which names NLX among its series. If a loader, robot or bar feeder stays with this lathe, name its maker and model, and state clearly whether it is included in the sale.

What to check on a DMG MORI NLX 2500SY

- Y axis end to end. The SY's Y axis travels ±50 mm (±2.0 in.). Jog it to both ends with a driven tool in the turret and watch the load meter at each end.
- Spindle 2 over its full travel. Drive spindle 2 the length of its B axis, 734 mm on a /700 or 1,284 mm on a /1250, then run it up to speed. Note the chuck on it as well as the one on spindle 1.
- Turret head and stations. Twelve stations is the standard head on the SY, with 10 station and, on the /700, 20 station heads in the option brackets. Index every station and list the driven holders that go with the lathe.
- Slideways on X, Y and Z. The maker runs all three linear axes on slideways. Look at the way wipers where the covers allow it and confirm the way lube unit cycles and its reservoir holds oil.
- Coolant through the castings. Mori Seiki circulates coolant through the castings of this series to keep their temperature uniform. Have the tank filled and the pump running when the lathe is shown.
- MAPPS version. The 2013 series page names MAPPSIV as its operating system. Write down the MAPPS version on the start screen.
