What the Mazak QT-250 is

The Mazak QT-250 is a CNC turning center — a machine for turning round parts between a chuck and, where fitted, a tailstock — shafts, flanges, housings and bar work. The manufacturer publishes a max turning diameter of 13.780 in / 350 mm. This one is specified with bar work: a bar feeder can run stock through the spindle.

What it is built to do

From the figures the manufacturer publishes, a Mazak QT-250 suits:

  • bar work up to 3.0 in / 65 mm fed through the spindle

Selling a used Mazak QT-250

Mazak's 2017 page for this machine sits beside the QUICK TURN 250M, 250MS, 250MSY and 250MY, and it calls the plain 250 a 2-axis machine. Those lettered builds are separate models, so read the full model name off the plate before describing the lathe. A buyer quotes the plate, and a plain 250 described with rotary tools or a second spindle starts the conversation on the wrong machine.

The control named on that page is the SmoothG CNC, which runs MAZATROL conversational programming and EIA-ISO programming on one screen. Write down the control model the screen shows and which of the two programming modes the shop has used, because a QT-250 built before that page may carry an earlier Mazak control, and the person who takes it over will ask how its programs were written.

Mazak built the 250 with a through-hole chuck as standard and a bar work capacity of 3.0 in (65 mm), and it names a bar feeder or a gantry robot as the way to run it unattended. When either one came with the lathe, put its make, its model and the bar sizes it is set for into the description, and say plainly whether it goes with the machine.

Mazak QT-250 specifications

Manufacturer specification. Every figure below was read from the manufacturer’s own published specification for this machine and checked back against that document word for word.

These are the manufacturer’s figures for this model as currently published. A machine built years ago may differ in control generation and in options, which is exactly why the questions below matter when you sell one.

What fits a Mazak QT-250

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Workholding

A 10-inch chuck. Jaw sets, soft jaws and collet chucks for this size are commodity items, but the chuck itself, and any spare jaws, travel with the machine and are counted in an offer.

Bar feeder fit

Bar capacity is 65 mm, so a bar feeder for this machine has to be sized for stock up to that diameter.

What years the Mazak QT-250 was built

Across the units we have tracked, build years run from 1999 to 2018. Observed across 25 marketplaces, not a manufacturer build record. The manufacturer specifies SmoothG, so a unit on an older control is an early one or a retrofit.

We track listings across 25 used-machinery marketplaces, and every competitor in this market is one of them, so this is a view none of them can produce for themselves. Right now there are 14 units of this exact designation on the market, drawn from 7 independent sources, spanning model years 1999 to 2018. A seller is competing with those units, which is why condition, tooling and control generation decide the number.

We count only listings whose model is spelled as this machine’s own designation. Near spellings that may be a different variant are excluded rather than counted, so this is a floor on what is out there, not a total.

What affects the value of a used Mazak QT-250

  • Control. The manufacturer specifies SmoothG.
  • Build year. The units we tracked were built from 1999 to 2018, across 8 model years, most often 2000 (3 units).
  • Against the published figures. The manufacturer gives max spindle speed 4000 rpm, spindle motor power 35.0 hp / 26 kw, turret stations 12 and chuck size 10″.

What to check on a Mazak QT-250

The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.

  • Which of the three beds. The QT-250 came on a 20, 40 or 60 inch bed. Mazak lists the maximum machining length for each as 18.733 in, 39.108 in and 58.858 in, so the bed decides the longest part the lathe takes. Read it from the plate or measure the Z travel, which runs 20.25 in, 40.75 in or 60.50 in.
  • The programmable tailstock. A CNC programmable tailstock is on Mazak's list for this model, with a W axis travel of 20.63 in, 42.13 in or 61.81 in by bed. Send it through its full stroke from a program and see that it stops where it is told.
  • The tool eye. An automatic tool eye is also on that list. Swing the arm down and touch off one tool; if the arm is missing or will not register, that is a part to replace and worth saying up front.
  • Twelve turret stations. The upper turret holds 12 tools. Index it through every station, tally which holders go along with the lathe, and note any station that has been left empty.
  • Spindle at top speed. Mazak rates the main spindle at 4000 rpm and 35.0 hp (26 kW) on a 30 minute rating. Bring it up to full speed for a few minutes and listen for bearing noise, and note the 10 in chuck's make and the jaw sets that come with it.
