What the maker publishes about the current Okuma HL-35
The HL-35 is one of Okuma's single saddle CNC lathes, listed beside the HL-20 in the maker's specification table. Its standard chuck size is 10 inches. On the shorter of its two bed lengths, parts can be machined to 610 mm long, and on the longer to 1,020 mm; on either, 350 mm is the diameter limit. Spindle speed reaches 3,500 min-1. The turret is of the V12 type. Its main drive carries 18.5/15 kW ratings, the first applying for up to 30 minutes and the second without a time limit. FANUC is the only numerical control named for the model. Footprints are printed in the same order as the bed lengths: 2,430 by 1,630 mm for the shorter machine and 3,370 by 1,630 mm for the longer, both standing 1,895 mm tall.

What to check on an Okuma HL-35
- Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 3,500 min-1. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
- Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 18.5/15 kW (30 min/continuous) of spindle power. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
- Chuck and bar. The manufacturer gives a chuck size of 10 inch. Check the jaws and the grip pressure.
- Bed and ways. The manufacturer gives a max turning diameter of 350 mm and a max turning length of 610 mm (shorter bed) or 1,020 mm (longer bed). Check the ways for wear near the chuck.
- Rigging and floor. The manufacturer gives a floor space of 2,430 × 1,630 × 1,895 mm (shorter bed (first of the two sizes printed)) or 3,370 × 1,630 × 1,895 mm (longer bed (second of the two sizes printed)). Confirm the rigging route and the floor will take that.
