What the maker publishes about the current Makino V33I
Makino's V33i is a vertical machining center aimed at hard milling dies and molds, laid out with the X and Z axes in the spindle head and the Y axis under the table. On Makino's current page the table is 750 x 450 mm, the X, Y and Z strokes are 650, 450 and 350 mm, and it takes workpieces up to 750 by 635 by 250 mm and 300 kg. The standard spindle turns 200 to 20,000 rpm and takes a CAT40 taper, and 30,000 and 40,000 rpm spindles and an HSK63 taper are listed as options. The tool magazine holds 25 tools as standard, with bigger magazines as options, and a tool change takes 4.8 seconds. To hold size over long cycles, the ballscrews are cooled through the core on every axis, the saddle and spindle carrier are kept at temperature by circulating oil, and the spindle is cooled through its core and lubricated under the bearing races.

What fits a Makino V33I
Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.
40-taper toolholders
This is a 40-taper spindle — the 7:24 steep taper that CAT-40, BT-40 and DIN 69871 (SK-40) holders all share. They share the taper and nothing else that matters: the retention knob and the flange form differ between those standards, so holders do not swap between them without changing pull studs. Knowing which standard a machine was tooled for is worth doing before the holders are packed. The manufacturer names CAT for this machine.

What to check on a Makino V33I
- Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 200 ~ 20,000 rpm (30,000 and 40,000 rpm optional). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
- Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of CAT40 (HSK63 optional). Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
- Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X X: 650 mm, Y Y: 450 mm and Z Z: 350 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
- Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 20 m/min. Measure the backlash on each axis.
- Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 25 (40,60 opt). Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
- Table. The manufacturer gives a table size of 750 × 450 mm and a table load of 300 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
