What the maker publishes about the current Makino V33I-5XB

Makino put a tilting trunnion table on the V33i-5XB so that die and mold shops can mill 3D shapes with the five axes interpolating together, or fix the two rotary axes and cut in 3+2 fashion. The table is a 200 mm pallet that tilts through 130 degrees, from minus 20 to plus 110, and turns a full 360 degrees, carrying up to 30 kg on parts as large as 250 mm across and 135 mm high, with some limits. Linear strokes come to 650 mm (X), 325 mm (Y) and 350 mm (Z), with 20 m/min rapids and cutting feed up to 787 in/min. Standard speed is 20,000 rpm, with 30,000 and 40,000 rpm spindles optional; the magazine starts at 25 pockets, with 40 and 60 as options, for tools 80 mm in diameter and 7 kg. Besides core cooling of the ballscrews and spindle, the page names a hydraulic Nano Slideway circuit on X and a separate oilmatic unit for holding machine temperatures.

What the Makino V33I-5XB is used for

Makino's page points the V33i-5XB at die and mold work: 3D shapes milled on five axes at once, parts reached on several sides in one setup, and undercuts and awkward features reached with short tools.

What fits a Makino V33I-5XB

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Pallets and fixturing

Fixtures, tombstones and spare pallets are cut for a pallet of this size and do not transfer to another machine. On a horizontal they are a large share of what is being sold, so count them before quoting.

What to check on a Makino V33I-5XB

  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 20,000 rpm (standard; 30,000 and 40,000 optional). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 650 mm, Y 325 mm and Z 350 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 20 m/min. Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 25 (40, 60 opt). Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
  • Pallet changer. The manufacturer gives a pallet size of Ø200 mm. Run a full pallet change, and count the pallets and fixtures that come with the machine.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 30 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
