What the maker publishes about the current Makino KE-55
Makino builds the KE-55 as a hand-operated milling machine that keeps the handwheel routine of a conventional mill while adding NC functions. Without writing a program, arcs, angled faces, tapped holes and pockets are cut by pressing buttons or turning the handles, and each axis moves by exactly the amount turned, positioning in steps of 1 µm. Feed rate and depth of cut can be adjusted to suit the cut, and a limit set on the working area keeps the tool from going too deep. The standard Professional En control also runs MDI and memory operation. Its 800 x 375 mm table holds up to 200 kg, the axes travel 550 mm in X, 320 mm in Y and 350 mm in Z, and rapids run at 4000 mm/min on X and Y and 2000 mm/min on Z. The #40 7/24 taper spindle runs from 40 to 4000 min-1. A quill rapid-feed lever is optional, and Makino lists a version with automatic quill feed for boring and small-diameter drilling.

What the Makino KE-55 is used for
Makino says the KE-55 keeps the handwheel routine of a manual mill but reaches work that would otherwise need an NC machine, and lists quill feed options for boring and small-diameter drilling.

What fits a Makino KE-55
Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.
40-taper toolholders
This is a 40-taper spindle — the 7:24 steep taper that CAT-40, BT-40 and DIN 69871 (SK-40) holders all share. They share the taper and nothing else that matters: the retention knob and the flange form differ between those standards, so holders do not swap between them without changing pull studs. Knowing which standard a machine was tooled for is worth doing before the holders are packed.

What to check on a Makino KE-55
- Control generation. The manufacturer specifies プロフェッショナルEn for this model. Units we have tracked run 1995 to 1999; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
- Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 40 ~ 4000 min -1 (range 40 to 4000). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
- Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of 7/24テーパ#40. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
- Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 550 mm, Y 320 mm and Z 350 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
- Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 4000 mm/min(X・Y 軸) (X and Y; Z is 2000 mm/min). Measure the backlash on each axis.
- Table. The manufacturer gives a table size of 800 × 375 mm and a table load of 200 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
