What the maker publishes about the current Grob G350A

GROB's access series starts with the G350a, a five-axis universal machining center whose spindle lies horizontal. X strokes 600 mm, Y 770 mm and Z 805 mm, and axis speeds reach 60 m/min for X and Z but 42 m/min for Y. Two rotary axes join the three linear ones for 5-sided work and simultaneous 5-axis interpolation, with A swiveling across a 230 degree range while B turns through 360 degrees. The 570 mm diameter table takes up to 400 kg bare and 340 kg when palletized, and parts must clear a 720 mm interference diameter. GROB times a chip-to-chip change at 4.5 s to VDI 2852 at 12,000 rpm and specifies positioning to 0.006 mm on each linear axis. The standard HSK-A63 motorized spindle gives 83 Nm at 12,000 rpm; 206 Nm at 16,000 rpm and a 47 Nm unit are listed options. Either a SIEMENS or a HEIDENHAIN control can be fitted. Total weight peaks at 15,100 kg, climbing to 16,600 kg once a pallet changer is fitted.

What the Grob G350A is used for

GROB's launch release for its access series lists automotive suppliers, general machine building, contract work, toolmaking and pump and fitting makers as the trades the G350a and G550a serve, for one-off parts and series runs alike, and has the spindle cut from overhead so chips fall away.

What fits a Grob G350A

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

HSK-A63 tooling

This machine takes HSK-A63 tooling — a hollow-shank interface, not a 7:24 steep taper. CAT, BT and SK holders do not fit it, and HSK holders of a different size do not fit each other.

Derived from Spindle taper: HSK-A63

What to check on a Grob G350A

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies SIEMENS or HEIDENHAIN for this model.
  • Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of HSK-A63. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 60/42/60 m/min (X/Y/Z). Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool-change time. The manufacturer gives a chip-to-chip time of 4.5 s (according to VDI 2852, at 12,000 rpm). Time a tool change against that.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 400/340 kg (without/with pallet). Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives 5 (three linear, two rotary) axes and Large swivel range 230 degrees (A), 360 degrees (B). Run each rotary axis through its range.
  • Rigging and floor. The manufacturer gives a machine weight of 15,100/16,600 kg (max., without/with pallet changer). Confirm the rigging route and the floor will take that.

Grob G350A control and documentation
