What the maker publishes about the current Grob G350

On the G350, GROB fits an HSK-A63 motorized spindle of its own make, rated at 12,000 rpm and 83 Nm as standard; optional units run at 16,000, 18,000, 21,000 or 30,000 rpm, the 16,000 rpm version giving 206 Nm. GROB's own label for the machine is 5-axis universal machining center, and its spindle lies horizontally. Simultaneous 5-axis interpolation and 5-sided work come from two rotary axes on top of the three linear ones, and the tilting rotary table swings 230 degrees in A and turns 360 degrees in B. X, Y and Z travels measure 600, 855 and 750 mm, at up to 70, 45 and 90 m/min. A 570 mm table holds 400 kg, or 340 kg once a pallet is fitted. GROB states a 2.7 s chip-to-chip time under VDI 2852 and positioning to within 0.006 mm. Two controls are named for the GROB 4 Pilot operator station: HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 and SIEMENS 840D sl. Without a pallet changer the machine weighs 15,300 kg; with one, 17,500 kg.

What the Grob G350 is used for

GROB's G350 page lists parts such as gas turbine blades and bone inserts, and describes milling parts in a very wide mix of materials on this five axis machine.

What fits a Grob G350

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

HSK-A63 tooling

This machine takes HSK-A63 tooling — a hollow-shank interface, not a 7:24 steep taper. CAT, BT and SK holders do not fit it, and HSK holders of a different size do not fit each other.

Derived from Spindle taper: HSK-A63

What to check on a Grob G350

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies SIEMENS 840D sl or HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 (GROB 4 Pilot panel) for this model. Units we have tracked run 2009 to 2014; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 12,000 rpm (standard) (optional spindles: 16,000, 18,000, 21,000 and 30,000 rpm). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 83 Nm (standard spindle) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
  • Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of HSK-A63. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 600 mm, Y 855 mm and Z 750 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 70/45/90 m/min (X/Y/Z). Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool-change time. The manufacturer gives a chip-to-chip time of 2.7 s (VDI 2852). Time a tool change against that.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table size of 570 mm (diameter) and a table load of 400/340 kg (max. without/with pallet). Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives 5 axes and Large swivel range A-axis 230 degrees, B-axis 360 degrees. Run each rotary axis through its range.
  • Rigging and floor. The manufacturer gives a machine weight of 15,300/17,500 kg (without/with pallet changer). Confirm the rigging route and the floor will take that.
