Among the larger-envelope VF Series machines from Haas, the VF-3 is a 40-taper vertical machining center working in three axes, with extra X and Z travel. X covers 40.00 in, Y covers 20.00 in, and Z covers 25.00 in. The spindle nose can come as close as 4.2 in to the table or rise to 29.2 in above it. Five T-slots cross the 48.0 in by 18.0 in table, which is rated for 3500 lb when the load is spread evenly. Spindle speed peaks at 8100 rpm, the drive is inline direct, and the rating is 30.0 hp. At 2000 rpm the standard spindle makes 90.0 ft-lbf, and the gearbox option gives 450 rpm torque of 250 ft-lbf. Listed tapers are HSK-A63, BT40 and CT40. Its carousel changer has 20 pockets for tools as heavy as 12.0 lb, and a tool swap averages 4.20 s. All axes traverse at 1000 ipm in rapid. Cutting feed is limited to 650 ipm.

• Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 8100 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
• Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 22.4 kW (30.0 hp) of spindle power and 122.0 Nm @ 2000 rpm (90.0 ft-lbf @ 2000 rpm) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
• Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of CT40 | BT40 | HSK-A63. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
• Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 1016 mm (40.00 in), Y 508 mm (20.00 in) and Z 635 mm (25.00 in) of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
• Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 25.4 m/min (1000 ipm). Measure the backlash on each axis.
• Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 20. Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
• Tool-change time. The manufacturer gives a tool-to-tool time of 4.20 s and a chip-to-chip time of 4.50 s. Time a tool change against that.
• Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 1588 kg (3500 lb). Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
