Who Builds EMAG Machines, and Where

EMAG machines come from the EMAG Group, headquartered in Salach, Germany. EMAG's own history traces the company to 1867, when it was founded in Bautzen, Saxony, as an iron foundry and engineering works. It was re-established in 1952 in Eislingen, building lathes and special purpose machines, and moved to Salach in 1969.

Building is spread over more than one site. EMAG bought the machine tool factory in Zerbst, Germany, in 1994 and made it the group's central manufacturing facility, opened its Jintan plant in China in 2014 as the central production site for the Asian market, inaugurated a newly built production facility in Salach in 2019, and broke ground on a plant in Querétaro, Mexico, in 2023.

In North America the company is EMAG L.L.C. EMAG founded its US subsidiary in 1980, and it now operates from Farmington Hills, Michigan, serving customers across North America and Canada.

KOEPFER, REINECKER, KARSTENS and the Other EMAG Group Names

EMAG grew by bringing specialist builders into the group, so machines carrying other names can belong to the same family. On EMAG's history page, KARSTENS, a German specialist in external cylindrical grinding of shaft-type parts, joined in 1997; REINECKER of Ulm, a specialist in internal cylindrical grinding of chucked parts, joined in 1999; and the gear hobbing specialist KOEPFER of Furtwangen joined in 2005. EMAG bought Dorner GmbH in 2009 and renamed it EMAG ECM GmbH.

EMAG's brands page now lists EMAG for turning, milling and drilling, EMAG LaserTec for joining and laser welding, EMAG ECM for electrochemical machining, EMAG KOEPFER for gear hobbing and EMAG SAMPUTENSILI (EMAG SU) for gear cutting. We buy under any of those names, and a KOEPFER hobber or a REINECKER grinder is priced as the machine type it is, not as a lathe.

The Pick-Up Spindle Behind VL, VSC, VLC and VTC

An EMAG turning machine works upside down from a conventional lathe. In EMAG's description of vertical pick-up turning, the work spindle both holds the part for machining and does the loading, while the tool sits fixed below the workpiece and never moves during the cut. EMAG dates the VSC, its first vertical turning center with a pick-up spindle, to 1992.

EMAG now sorts the lines in two. The VL series is its modular range of space-saving vertical turning machines with integrated automation, built on a MINERALIT polymer concrete body, with a Y-axis available in the turret and a FANUC iHMI control panel on the current models. The VLC, VSC and VST 50 are its customized machines for chucked parts, where EMAG calls each VSC a self-sufficient manufacturing cell with integrated loading, and the VTC series is built for shafts. Knowing which of the two worlds a machine comes from is the first thing we sort out on a call.

The EMAG Models We Are Asked About Most

The EMAG model pages on this site are the VL 3 DUO, the VL 4 and the VSC 250, and the EMAG searches that reach our listings name the same families, with the VL 5i alongside them. The first page of listings also carries KOEPFER-built VLC 200 H gear hobbing machines and VL 4 H hobbing machines, which EMAG builds on its pick-up platform. Those are scoped on their gear-cutting capacity, not as lathes.

What EMAG Itself Does With Used Machines

EMAG's After Sales and Service covers training, preventive maintenance, retrofitting and spare parts. EMAG says it draws on more than 25 years of retrofit projects and credits the Mineralit polymer concrete base for letting its machines be rebuilt. It also buys old machines, upgrades them and puts them back on the market, and it sells slightly used, demonstration and trade fair machines.

What Is Actually in the Emag Listings We Hold

This group holds 919 listings, counted across the whole hub, not sampled. They spread across 60 category labels, and 30 of those labels hold exactly one listing. The largest single label is Metal Cutting at 402, a broad parent-level bucket rather than a machine type, worth naming once and then moving on. The second largest label is CNC Injection Molding Machines at 109, cataloged alongside these machines and taken up further down. The machine tool shape is the useful part: CNC Lathes 91, CNC Miscellaneous Machines 40, CNC Gear Machinery 31, CNC Vertical Machining Centers 24, CNC Grinding Machines 23 and CNC Vertical Turret Lathes 19. What matters most to a seller is the model spread. Those 919 listings carry 812 distinct model strings, and the most repeated string in the group appears 7 times, so almost every machine is a one-off entry. Build years are recorded on 492 of them and run from 1976 to 2025. A nameplate alone does not describe a machine here, which is why each one gets scoped individually.

VL, VSC, VLC and VTC: The Vertical Pick-Up Families

These are the families most people mean when they search for a used Emag. In our listings VSC totals 49 (VSC 37, VSC315 4, VSC400 4, VSC160 2, VSC130 2), VL totals 47 (VL 35, VL3 8, VL5I 4), VLC totals 18 (VLC 14, VLC450 2, VLC200 2) and VTC totals 13. The strings a searcher actually types are in the same set: VSC 250 DS, VSC 400, VSC 250, VSC 315, VTC 250, VL 7, VL 6, VL 5, VL 4, VL3, VLC450 and VLC200. The DUO variants earn a mention, because a twin-spindle VTC 250 DUO or VL-3-DUO is a different machine to move than a single-spindle unit. On EMAG's own pages, VL is the modular pick-up line for chucked parts, VSC and VLC are its customized machines for chucked parts, and VTC is the line built for shafts. What Determines the Offer on a Used Emag

Control type is the first fork. We buy Emag machines running Fanuc and machines running Siemens Sinumerik, and which one sits on the machine changes who wants it next. After that comes model and year, spindle hours, condition, and what leaves the floor with it. That last item is no formality on a pick-up lathe. The spindle does the loading, so the conveyor, the part handling, the gantry loader and the automation around the cell are part of the machine rather than accessories bolted on. A machine quoted with its loading system and one quoted without it are two different offers. Year matters for the same practical reason: build years here run from 1976 to 2025, and a mid-1980s machine is not the same conversation about parts and service as a 2020 one. Grinding, Gear and the Automation Around the Cell

A turning cell rarely leaves the floor by itself, and this group reflects that. Beyond the vertical lathes we hold CNC Gear Machinery at 31, CNC Vertical Machining Centers at 24, CNC Grinding Machines at 23, CNC Automation and Pallet Systems at 15 and CNC Gantry and Portal Mills at 14. Add the boring mills, the milling machines and the five-axis and horizontal centers, and the milling side comes to 51 listings. The model tokens line up with that. On the grinding and gear side you find VG and VG110, the G160, G250, G375, G400, G500 and GS400 designations, the HG204, HG208, HG208CD and HG306 hobbing entries, and K160 and K300. Koepfer-designated machines turn up under this nameplate too; we buy the gear machinery and leave it at that. On automation, ROBOT leads 22 listings, ROBBY 7 and R500 4. The Long Tail Under This Nameplate

Sixty category labels is a wide spread for one nameplate, and 30 of them hold a single listing. Plenty of what sits here is not turning equipment at all. Injection molding presses cataloged alongside these machines total 142 across two labels, which is 15.5 percent of the group and more than the 128 turning and lathe listings. Crane, hoist and material-handling listings come to 32, spread across 12 separate labels. There are extruders, filling machines, rolling mills, transformers, a slitting line and a food processing machine in here too, plus 40 entries under CNC Miscellaneous Machines. That is what a working plant floor looks like, cataloged honestly. It is also the practical reason to call us on a clearance rather than a single sale. When a cell comes out, the machine tools in it are what we quote; cranes, hoists and material handling gear in the same bay are outside what MTE buys.
