What the maker publishes about the current Makino G5

Makino titles the G5 a 5-axis CNC grinding machine and calls it a horizontal machining center able to grind, mill, drill and tap. Travel is 520 mm on X, 560 mm on Y and 600 mm on Z, and the pallet is 250 mm. The B-axis moves 270 degrees, from -90 to +180 degrees, the C-axis turns 360 degrees, and there is no A-axis. The spindle runs to 12,000 rpm. Rapids reach 48,000 mm/min, the same as the top cutting feedrate. Maximum workpiece size is listed as 440 Ø x 380 SR, and maximum payload is 120 kg. The tool changer holds 60 tools. Tools can be up to 360 mm long in CAT and 400 mm in HSK, 70 mm in diameter (or 220 mm with limitation), and 12 kg in weight.

What fits a Makino G5

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Pallets and fixturing

Fixtures, tombstones and spare pallets are cut for a pallet of this size and do not transfer to another machine. On a horizontal they are a large share of what is being sold, so count them before quoting.

What to check on a Makino G5

  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 12,000 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 520 mm, Y 560 mm and Z 600 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 48,000 mm/min. Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 60 tools. Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
  • Pallet changer. The manufacturer gives a pallet size of 250 mm. Run a full pallet change, and count the pallets and fixtures that come with the machine.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 120 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Work envelope. The manufacturer gives maximum workpiece 440 Ø x 380 SR. Measure your largest part, with its fixture, against that.
  • Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives B-Axis 270° (-90°to +180°) and C-Axis 360°. Run each rotary axis through its range.

When the Makino G5 was built

Makino announced the G5 grinder, a horizontal machining center that grinds, drills, bores and mills on one machine, in a January 2007 release, so the G5 was introduced in 2007.
