Hermle's English page for the C 42, kept in a web archive copy, describes a five-axis machining center that moves three axes in the tool and two in the part. Its bed is a modified gantry made of mineral casting, laid out to be thermally symmetric. Travel is 800 mm in X and 800 mm in Y, and the 990 mm collision circle takes workpieces as wide as 800 mm. Spindles were offered at 15000, 18000, 25000 and 42000 rpm, as two-piece or compact units, and linear rapids reach 60 m/min. Table loads reach 1400 kg in five-axis work and 2000 kg on the three-axis build, and the C axis of the swivelling rotary table can be driven through a worm gear or by a torque motor. A magazine set into the bed holds 42 tools as standard, and add-on magazines take the count as high as 528 pockets. Milling and turning can also be combined.
