Haas builds the UMC-500SS as a 40-taper universal machining center in its UMC-500 Series, set up for 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis machining. The SS version carries a faster spindle, a high-speed tool changer and a high-speed trunnion table. Linear travels are 24.00 in on X, 16.00 in on Y and 16.00 in on Z, and the spindle nose sits roughly 4.0 in to 20.0 in above the platter. The C axis turns a full 360°, and both rotary axes move at up to 179 °/sec. The 400 mm platter has 5 standard T-slots and takes up to 500 lb, and parts up to 18.0 in may swing on it. The liquid-cooled, inline direct-drive spindle reaches 12000 rpm and 30.0 hp, with 90.0 ft-lbf at 2000 rpm, in CT40, BT40 or HSK-A63 taper. Its side-mount changer holds 30+1 tools. Rapids reach 1200 ipm on X, Y and Z. A wireless probing system and a 55-gallon coolant tank are standard, and a 95-gallon tank is an option.
