What the maker published about the Haas SL-30

For the SL-30, Haas sets the maximum turning capacity at 17 in by 34 in (432 by 864 mm), lists a 10 in (254 mm) chuck and gives bar capacity as up to 3.0 in (76 mm). The lathe is part of the SL Series, for which Haas describes a space-saving Big Bore option that raises capacity inside the original footprint. Its heavy headstock casting is ribbed symmetrically to resist flexing and heat growth. Wye-delta switching happens while the spindle runs. Chip trays are built in, and a large coolant system carries the chips away. A Live Tooling section appears in the page's menu. The control text names tool management, single-button keys, USB connection and a screen of 15 in.

What the Haas SL-30 is used for

A March 2002 Haas release says the SL-30's spindle was redone with a larger bore, raising bar capacity by half an inch to 3.0 in for bar feeding and bar pulling, and that a Big Bore build with a 40 hp drive and a two-speed gearbox takes bar to 4 in when more power is wanted without a larger lathe.
