What the maker publishes about the current Grob G550

GROB's G550 is a 5-axis universal machining center with a horizontal motorized spindle. Three linear axes and two rotary axes give 5-sided machining and 5-axis simultaneous interpolation, and its tilting rotary table swivels through 230 degrees on A and 360 degrees on B. Working travels are 800/1,020/970 mm in X, Y and Z, with axis speeds up to 65/50/80 m/min. The table is 770 mm in diameter and carries 700 kg on a pallet or 800 kg without one, and the interference diameter is 900 mm. Chip-to-chip time is 2.8 s to VDI 2852, and positioning is specified to within 0.006 mm. Spindle choices range from HSK-A100 units at 6,000 rpm to an HSK-A63 unit at 30,000 rpm. A pallet clamping table, or a table with only an A or only a B axis, is optional. Its GROB 4 Pilot panel pairs with a SIEMENS 840D sl or a HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 CNC. Total weight is 24,800 kg without a pallet changer and 27,500 kg with one.

What to check on a Grob G550

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies SIEMENS 840D sl or HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 for this model. Units we have tracked run 2011 to 2017; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 30,000 rpm (fastest listed spindle version (HSK-A63, 63 Nm); spindle versions are a choice). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 800 mm, Y 1,020 mm and Z 970 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 65/50/80 m/min (X/Y/Z axes). Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool-change time. The manufacturer gives a chip-to-chip time of 2.8 s (according to VDI 2852). Time a tool change against that.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table size of 770 mm (diameter) and a table load of 700/800 kg (with/without pallet). Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives 5 (three linear, two rotary; 5-axis simultaneous interpolation) axes and Swivel range 230 degrees (A), 360 degrees (B). Run each rotary axis through its range.
  • Rigging and floor. The manufacturer gives a machine weight of 24,800/27,500 kg (without/with pallet changer). Confirm the rigging route and the floor will take that.

Grob G550 control and documentation
