What the maker publishes about the current Tsugami SS20

Tsugami's SS20 is a Swiss-type lathe with opposed gang tooling, sized for bar stock up to 20 mm. It uses the SS series' Modular Tool Zone, where rotary tools, indexed holders and turning holders swap out as units. The machine has 6 axes. Its sliding headstock works through a guide bushing over a 220 mm stroke. With an optional chucker kit it runs without the guide bushing, on a 45 mm stroke, and takes drawn bar stock in place of centerless ground stock. Tool positions are 24 as standard and 40 at most. Live positions run from 10 standard to 13 maximum. Main spindle speed spans 200 to 10,000 rpm. The main spindle motor is rated 2.2/3.7 kW. The sub spindle shares that 200 to 10,000 rpm span. Live tools turn at 5,000 rpm. Control is a FANUC 32i-B. It weighs 3,400 kg on a 2,020 × 1,675 × 2,020 mm footprint. Listed options include gear hobbing, polygon cutting and thread whirling, plus angular, face and high speed drills.

What the Tsugami SS20 is used for

Tsugami America pitches the SS20 Swiss-type lathe at small parts with many features in both long and short runs, and says it can be converted to work as a chucker.

What fits a Tsugami SS20

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Bar feeder fit

Bar capacity is 20 mm, so a bar feeder for this machine has to be sized for stock up to that diameter.

Derived from Bar capacity: 20 mm

What to check on a Tsugami SS20

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies FANUC 32i-B for this model. Units we have tracked run 2008 to 2012; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 200 – 10,000 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 2.2 / 3.7 kW of spindle power. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
  • Bar work. The manufacturer gives a bar capacity of 20 mm. Check any bar feeder is set for that bar.
  • Rotary tools and second spindle. The manufacturer gives the rotary tooling as 10/13 (live tool positions, standard / maximum). Check that the rotary tools still drive under load. The manufacturer gives the second spindle as 200 – 10,000 rpm (sub spindle speed). Check that it synchronizes with the main spindle on a part transfer.
  • Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives 6 axes. Run each rotary axis through its range.
  • Rigging and floor. The manufacturer gives a machine weight of 3,400 kg and a floor space of 2,020 × 1,675 × 2,020 mm (W x D x H). Confirm the rigging route and the floor will take that.
