The Mazak VTC-200B is a CNC vertical machining center — a machine for milling, drilling and tapping on a fixed table with a vertical spindle — the general-purpose workhorse of most shops. The manufacturer publishes a x-axis travel of 44.09″.

Selling a used Mazak VTC-200B
Mazak's 2001 English product page lists the VTC-200B next to the VTC-200C and a VTC-200G marked USA ONLY. All three have 510 mm of Y travel, and what separates them is length. The 200B carries a 1460 x 510 mm table (57.48 x 20.08 in) with 1120 mm (44.09 in) of X, while the 200G runs a 154.33 in table. Read the model off the plate first, because table length is the first figure a buyer asks about.
An older VTC-20B appears on the 1998 mazakusa.com vertical page with the same 44 x 20 x 20 in strokes and a 57 x 20 in table, and that page gives the VTC line 8,000 rpm as standard with 10,000 rpm as an option. If the plate reads 20B and not 200B, the machine is that earlier model, and it should be described under its own name with its own spindle figure.
Mazak's US vertical page from December 2000 says the VTC machines were now available with the new Fusion 640 Mazatrol control. Write down the control name the screen shows at start-up and its software version, and say whether the shop programmed in Mazatrol conversational or in G code. If programs, tool files or parameter backups exist on a card or disk, list them with the machine.
Mazak's Japanese page for the 200B and 200C gives a 24 tool magazine as standard and a 30 tool magazine as an option. Count the pockets before describing the machine and state whether it has 24 or 30, since two units with the same plate can differ here. Count the toolholders that stay with it as a separate line.
For a buyer, Mazak's 2004 English page gives the 200B a 10000 rpm spindle on an AC 15 kW (20 HP) motor, a 24 tool magazine with a 4.7 second chip-to-chip change, and a table load of 800 kg (1760 lbs) spread evenly. The same page calls the machine a traveling column vertical machining center, so the table stays put and the column moves along X.
Mazak's current VTC page describes today's builds, not the 200B, yet it says the same about the layout: the table is fixed and the spindle traverses, and robots and hydraulic fixtures can be installed on that fixed table. If a robot, a loader or a hydraulic fixture was set up on this machine, write down who made it, which model it is, and say if it is part of the deal.

40-taper toolholders
This is a 40-taper spindle — the 7:24 steep taper that CAT-40, BT-40 and DIN 69871 (SK-40) holders all share. They share the taper and nothing else that matters: the retention knob and the flange form differ between those standards, so holders do not swap between them without changing pull studs. Knowing which standard a machine was tooled for is worth doing before the holders are packed.

- Control. The dealer listings give Mazatrol Fusion 640M.
- Build year. The units we tracked were built from 1999 to 2021, across 7 model years, most often 1999 (5 units).
- Against the published figures. The dealer listings give max spindle speed 10,000 RPM, spindle motor power 20 HP, tool capacity 24 ATC and X-axis travel 44.09″.
What to check on a Mazak VTC-200B
The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.
- Table length against the plate. Mazak gives the 200B a 1460 x 510 mm table and 1120 mm of X. Measure the table end to end; a table well over 1460 mm long matches the 200C or 200G figures on the same page, not the 200B.
- Table width, 160B or 200B. The same 2001 page lists a VTC-160B, marked USA ONLY, with a 1460 mm table and 1120 mm of X like the 200B, but only 410 mm of Y on a 410 mm wide table. Measure across the table: the 200B figure is 510 mm, and a 410 mm table points to the 160B.
- Spindle run-up time. The Japanese page says the spindle climbs from 0 to 10000 rpm in 1.8 seconds and rates the 15 kW motor for 10 minutes. Time a start to full speed with a phone stopwatch, then hold it at that speed and note any rumble or whine.
- Tool changes through the magazine. A 4.7 second chip-to-chip change is the English page's figure. Call every pocket to the spindle once and write down any pocket where the arm stalls, hesitates or throws an alarm.
- Adaptive feedrate control. Mazak's 2000 page lists adaptive feedrate control, which changes the feed as spindle motor load varies. Find out whether the shop has it switched on and note that in the option list.
- Column travel on the guide ways. Linear guide ways are on the VTC list. Move the column over its full X travel with the handwheel and feel for any spot where it drags, chatters or sticks.
- Any hydraulic unit beside it. The same page says the VTC has no hydraulics. If a hydraulic power unit sits beside this machine, it is not part of Mazak's base build, so note what it feeds and whether it stays.
