What the maker publishes about the current Mazak QUICK TURN 350

Mazak builds the 350 as a CNC lathe for 12 inch chuck work, fitted with a bolt-on turret and offered in two universal lengths, 650U and 1500U. Either length has a 27 inch maximum swing, turns parts as large as 17 inch across and accepts bar stock up to 4 inch. Spindle speed peaks at 4000 rpm, and the motor is rated at 30 kW (40 HP) for 30 minutes. A 12 position turret is fitted. Where the two lengths part ways is reach along the bed: on the 650U, parts up to 24 inch long can be machined with 26 inch of Z travel, while the 1500U accepts parts up to 63 inch long and gives 62 inch of Z travel. X travel stays at 10 inch on both. Rotary tools, a Y axis and a second spindle are listed on differently named builds, the 350M, 350MY and 350MSY, each with a VDI turret.

What fits a Mazak QUICK TURN 350

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Workholding

A 12-inch chuck. Jaw sets, soft jaws and collet chucks for this size are commodity items, but the chuck itself, and any spare jaws, travel with the machine and are counted in an offer.

Derived from Chuck size: 12"

Bar feeder fit

Bar capacity is 4 in, so a bar feeder for this machine has to be sized for stock up to that diameter.

What to check on a Mazak QUICK TURN 350

  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 4000 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 30 kW (40 HP) (30 min. rating) of spindle power. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
  • Turret. The manufacturer gives the turret stations as 12. Index every station and time a full turn.
  • Chuck and bar. The manufacturer gives a chuck size of 12" and a bar capacity of Φ4" (650U and 1500U). Check the jaws and the grip pressure; check any bar feeder is set for that bar.
  • Bed and ways. The manufacturer gives a max turning diameter of Φ17" (650U and 1500U) and a max turning length of 24" (650U) or 63" (1500U). Check the ways for wear near the chuck.
