Mazak's NEXUS QTN 350 MY, a multi-tasking CNC lathe, pairs a 12" (305 mm) chuck with an integrated main spindle motor of 40 hp, turning at up to 3,300 rpm. C-axis positioning comes from that same spindle in steps of 0.0001°, and for milling it acts as a full CNC axis. Cutting tools sit in a 12-position drum turret whose rotary tool spindle, rated 10 hp and 4,000 rpm, handles milling, drilling and tapping. Tool Eye presetting is standard equipment: a tool tip brought against it has its nose offset logged and the tool measured with no manual entry, and it can be programmed to check wear at intervals. On the 2011 machine the control was the sixth-generation MATRIX NEXUS, with a 12" color LCD, a QWERTY keyboard, a pointing device and a USB port, plus 3D simulation of a cycle to check for interference before cutting. Automation choices ran from a bar feeder to pedestal or overhead robot arms.
