What the maker publishes about the current Makino IQ300

Makino's iQ300 is a three-axis vertical machining center for micromachining, and the maker names LED tooling and optical surface finishes among its uses. Its T-slot table is 600 x 400 mm and carries up to 100 kg, and the axes travel 400 mm in X, 350 mm in Y and 200 mm in Z. Linear motors drive all three axes, with position read from 0.005 micron scales. Both rapid and cutting rates reach 16,000 mm/min on X and Y and 8,000 mm/min on Z. The HSK-E32 spindle reaches 45,000 rpm, and its temperature is held by core cooling, under-race and jacket systems. A 40-tool magazine is standard, for tools up to 20 mm in diameter, and the Makino Hybrid ATLM measures tool length. Workpieces can reach 600 by 580 by 190 mm. Control is the Makino Professional 6 running Super GI.5. A thermal guard for bed and column, an air dryer, nozzle coolant and a transformer appear on the standard list.

What fits a Makino IQ300

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

HSK-E32 tooling

This machine takes HSK-E32 tooling — a hollow-shank interface, not a 7:24 steep taper. CAT, BT and SK holders do not fit it, and HSK holders of a different size do not fit each other.

Derived from Spindle taper: HSK-E32

What to check on a Makino IQ300

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies Makino Professional 6 Control for this model.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 45,000. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of HSK-E32. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 400 mm, Y 350 mm and Z 200 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 16,000 mm/min (X / Y), 8,000 mm/min (Z). Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 40. Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table size of 600 x 400 mm and a table load of 100 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Work envelope. The manufacturer gives maximum workpiece 600 x 580 x 190 mm. Measure your largest part, with its fixture, against that.
