What the maker publishes about the current Makino A500Z

Makino places the a500Z in its horizontal range as a five-axis machine, building a Z-type B and C rotary pair into the base design. Both rotary units are direct drive: B turns an unlimited 360° and the slant-style C unit covers 180°. Together they can hold the pallet top anywhere from horizontal to parallel with the spindle centerline. X and Y strokes are 730 mm and 750 mm, while Z spans 500 mm to 700 mm depending on where the rotary axes sit. Pallets are 500 mm. Parts may stand 500 mm tall, span Ø 630 mm and weigh 400 kg. Every axis has closed loop temperature control as standard. The base spindle turns 14,000 rpm, peaking at 37 kW and 223 ft-lbs; a 20,000 rpm spindle is optional. Linear rapids are 60,000 mm/min, and B rotates at 45,000 degrees per minute. A 60-tool ring magazine is standard, with 133, 218 or 313 tools as options. An automatic pallet changer and the Fanuc based Pro-6 control come standard.

What fits a Makino A500Z

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Pallets and fixturing

Fixtures, tombstones and spare pallets are cut for a pallet of this size and do not transfer to another machine. On a horizontal they are a large share of what is being sold, so count them before quoting.

What to check on a Makino A500Z

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies Fanuc based Pro-6 CNC control for this model.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 14,000 (std.) / 20,000 (opt.). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 49.6 HP (37 kW) (peak, standard 14,000 RPM spindle) of spindle power and 223 ft-lbs (303 N-m) (peak, standard 14,000 RPM spindle) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 730 mm and Y 750 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 60,000 mm/min. Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 60 (std.) / 133, 218, 313 (opts.). Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
  • Pallet changer. The manufacturer gives a pallet size of 500 mm. Run a full pallet change, and count the pallets and fixtures that come with the machine.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 400 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives 5-Axis axes, B-Axis 360° (unlimited) – Direct Drive and C-Axis 180° - Direct Drive. Run each rotary axis through its range.
