ULTRASONIC 20 linear is a 5-axis machine of gantry (Y-portal) layout from DMG MORI that pairs HSC milling with ultrasonic machining of hard materials. Linear motors move X, Y and Z through 7.9 in., 8.7 in. and 11 in., at rapids of 131.2 ft/min on each. Its water-cooled spindle runs to 42,000 rpm as standard; a 60,000 rpm spindle is an option, and ultrasonic work is capped at 50,000 rpm. At 100% duty the spindle gives 20.1 hp and 4.4 ft./lbs. Tools sit in HSK-E32 or HSK-E40 actuator holders that oscillate at 15-55 kHz. The magazine holds 24 tools, 60 at most. A 9.8 in. table takes 33 lbs. and parts up to 7.1 in. tall; the optional NC swivel rotary table tilts A from -15° to 130° and turns C a full 360°. Control is CELOS with SIEMENS. In 2016 a Tool Body version was shown for carbide bodies of CVD and PCD tools, cutting spiral or straight chip flutes, with programming software for the SIEMENS 840D Operate 4.7.
