DMG MORI builds the DMU 50 3rd Generation as a CNC universal milling machine that works in five axes on a swivel rotary table. Travel is 650 mm on X, 520 mm on Y and 475 mm on Z. Workpieces can measure up to 630 mm across and 600 mm tall, and weigh up to 300 kg. The B axis swivels from -35° to +110°, and the table bearings are cooled. In its basic version the speedMASTER spindle gives 81.9 ft lb of torque and 28.2 hp at 15,000 rpm. Two spindles are optional: a 15,000 rpm version producing 147.5 ft lb and 61.7 hp, and a 20,000 rpm version producing 95.9 ft lb and 46.9 hp. The magazine holds 30 tools as standard, with 60, 120 or 180 pockets as options, and tools load from the front while the machine cuts. The machine bed is one piece, the ball screws are direct driven, and every axis has direct path measuring. Control choices are SIEMENS, HEIDENHAIN and MAPPS Fanuc.

What to check on a DMG MORI DMU 50

• Control generation. The manufacturer specifies SIEMENS, or HEIDENHAIN, or MAPPS Fanuc for this model. Units we have tracked run 2007 to 2022; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
• Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 15,000 rpm (basic version). Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
• Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 28.2 hp (basic version) of spindle power and 81.9 ft lb (basic version) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
• Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 650 mm, Y 520 mm and Z 475 mm of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
• Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 30 pockets (basic version). Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
• Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 300 kg. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
• Work envelope. The manufacturer gives max. workpiece diameter 630 mm and max. workpiece height 600 mm. Measure your largest part, with its fixture, against that.
• Rotary axes. The manufacturer gives 5 axes and Swivel area of the B-axis -35°/+ 110°. Run each rotary axis through its range.

DMG MORI introduced the DMU 50 3rd Generation as a world premiere at its Open House in Pfronten in February 2017, building on a DMU 50 line it says has more than 20 years behind it; the release gives no year for the 2nd Generation.
