Haas presents the GT-20 as a compact lathe that fits a floor area of 8 x 4.5 ft (2.4 x 1.4 m) and handles parts up to 11 x 12 in (279 x 305 mm). Over the front apron the swing is 13 in (330 mm), and over the cross slide 9.25 in (235 mm), where gang-style tools mount. The X axis travels 6 in (152 mm) with 2400 lb of thrust, the Z axis 12 in (305 mm) with 3700 lb, and both rapid at 710 ipm (18 m/min). The vector drive, designed by Haas and rated 20 hp (14.9 kW) at peak, gives 154 ft-lb (209 Nm) of peak torque. In its base form the machine runs to 3000 rpm and comes with no chuck, hydraulic system or turret; with the hydraulic chuck option the spindle reaches 4000 rpm. The A2-6 nose has a 3 in (76 mm) bore for through-hole chucks and collets, which are options.

In its release on the new lathe, Haas framed the GT-20 as an answer for smaller shops whose work had shifted to short runs and parts needing several setups: a chucker lathe to take over second operations where floor room is tight.
