How Selling Your TOS Works

  1. Send the plate: the builder and the type

Use the form or call with the builder named on the plate (TOS VARNSDORF, TOS Hulín or TOSHULIN, TOS Olomouc, TOS Hostivař or another TOS works), the type designation such as WHN 13 or SKIQ, the serial number, the control and whether it has been retrofitted. Photos of the plate and the control screen help, but they are optional.

  2. An offer back in 24-48 hours

We price your TOS on its builder, type and condition and send a cash offer, usually within 24 to 48 hours. You deal with the buyer directly, not a broker; we have been buying machines since 2012.

  3. Pickup we can arrange

Accept the offer and we can arrange the rigging, crating, freight and pickup, from a table-type boring mill or a cylindrical grinder to a floor-type mill or a large vertical lathe.

Who Makes TOS Machines

TOS is not one company. Several Czech machine tool builders carry the name, each with its own plant, history and product line. TOS VARNSDORF, in Varnsdorf, builds horizontal boring mills, machining centres and portals. TOSHULIN, formerly TOS Hulín, builds vertical lathes. TOS Olomouc builds knee-type and CNC milling machines, and TOS Hostivař, in Prague, builds universal and surface grinding machines.

Their own histories show where the shared name comes from. TOS VARNSDORF says its Varnsdorf works became part of a larger group of nationalised factories in 1946, Spojené továrny na obráběcí stroje (United Machine Tool Factories, a national enterprise), spent a few months of 1949 as part of TOS Čelákovice n.p., and from 1950 ran as TOS Varnsdorf n.p. The national enterprise TOS Olomouc was established in 1950, and TOS Hostivař n.p. was formed the same year when the Podhajský and Kameníček firms merged to build grinding machines. Today they are separate businesses: TOS VARNSDORF was privatised with purely Czech capital in 1995, TOS Hulín became TOSHULIN a.s. in 1996, TOS Olomouc is listed among TOS VARNSDORF's subsidiaries, and TOS Hostivař is part of RM Holding.

TOS VARNSDORF Horizontal Boring Mills

The WH, WHN, WHQ and W 100 A boring mills come from TOS VARNSDORF. The company dates itself to 1903, when Arno Plauert bought the Varnsdorf works, and it built horizontal boring machines from 1915, with regular serial production from 1927 under the designation HB, for Horizontal Bohrwerk. In 1945 it dropped every other type of machine tool to build horizontal boring machines only, and its history says the factory never stopped running through either world war.

Its numerically controlled machines start with the WH 100 in 1959, which Varnsdorf calls the first numerically controlled horizontal boring machine in Czechoslovakia, and the WHN line that followed from 1963. The W 100 A went into serial production in 1978 and stayed in production, in various modifications, for as much as 25 years. Today Varnsdorf sorts its horizontal machines into plate-type boring machines, such as the WH 10, WH 105, WHN 13/15 and WHR 13, and floor-type boring machines, such as the WRD 130/150/160 and WRD 170/200.

TOS VARNSDORF Boring Mill Milestones

TOSHULIN Vertical Lathes and the SKIQ

The SKIQ vertical lathes in our listings come from TOSHULIN, which was known as TOS Hulín until 1996. Its history says the Hulín plant was founded in 1949, built machine tools from 1951 and in time made vertical turning lathes exclusively. In 1959 it built a numerically controlled vertical lathe that it calls the first numerically controlled machine tool produced in Czechoslovakia, and in 1974 it introduced a 15-position tool magazine on the SKIQ, a model it still manufactures.

TOSHULIN says it has installed more than 13,500 machine tools in more than 70 countries. It lists sites in Hulín and Kuřim, and in 2025 TOS KUŘIM – OS, a.s. became part of the company. It overhauls its older machines, mainly the SKIQ, SKA and POWERTURN types, and says it has complete documentation on every machine produced in its factory.

TOS Olomouc Mills and TOS Hostivař Grinders

TOS Olomouc traces its tradition to 1922 and became the national enterprise TOS Olomouc in 1950; in 1958 it was folded into the national enterprise TOS Kurim as a branch plant, and it says it has built more than 30000 machine tools. It built its FA3 milling machine from 1964 to 2003 and today lists knee-type mills and toolroom mills such as the FNG 40 CNC A.

TOS Hostivař builds UB universal, UBB special and UBH heavy grinding machines and BPH surface grinders, and calls itself the carrier of the long tradition of TOS Hostivař. The B-prefix cylindrical grinder families in our listings, such as the BUB, BUC and BUA, are not among the lines on TOS Hostivař's current site, so we place those by the data plate rather than by the builder's catalog.

Reading a TOS Plate Before You Sell

On a TOS, the builder named on the plate comes first, because a TOS VARNSDORF boring mill, a TOSHULIN vertical lathe and a TOS Hostivař grinder are different machines from different companies. The type designation comes next. For a Varnsdorf boring mill, say whether it is a plate-type machine such as a WHN or WH, or a floor-type WRD, since Varnsdorf builds and sorts them as separate families.

Then the control and the service record. TOS VARNSDORF retrofits the boring mills it built, renewing their mechanical, electrical and control parts, and TOSHULIN modernises its machines, typically with a new control system. A machine with paperwork from that kind of work is a stronger sale than the same type with no record, so send what you have.

TOS Service in North America, or Selling Outright

TOS VARNSDORF set up TOS TRADE North America, LLC for the USA in 2006, and lists it as its sales agency and service centre for Canada and the USA, with a spare parts warehouse. Varnsdorf supplies original spare parts and technical documentation for its machines and carries out repairs, general overhauls and retrofits of the boring mills it built. TOSHULIN does complete overhauls of its older vertical lathes at its factory, which it says leave a nearly all-new machine.

That support is the right call for a TOS you plan to keep running. For one you want off the floor, whether it runs or sits idle, we buy it outright and quote it on its own plate.

What Is in the TOS Book Right Now

Every one of the 2,134 listings on this hub is a TOS, and the catalog files them across 24 categories. CNC lathes lead at 473, ahead of 355 grinding machines, 298 filed as CNC miscellaneous machines, and 283 horizontal boring mills. Then 197 milling machines, 144 boring mills and 94 gear machines. The tail is still real equipment: 56 vertical turret lathes, 50 gantry and portal mills, 50 vertical boring mills, 40 drilling and tapping centers, 35 vertical machining centers, 19 horizontal machining centers and 12 band saws, down to a few press brakes and rotary tables. Read the 298 honestly, because CNC miscellaneous machines is a catch-all facet rather than a machine type, which is why it sits third. Group the facets and the shape gets clearer: 531 listings sit in a turning-named category, 477 across the three boring-mill categories, 359 across the two grinding categories, and 305 across milling and machining centers.

TOS Boring Mills: WHN, WHQ, WH and W100A

477 of the 2,134 listings sit in one of the three boring-mill categories, and 283 of those are filed as CNC horizontal boring mills. WHN carries that run with 101 listings, 53 filed as horizontal boring mills and 48 as boring mills. WH follows at 42, split 24 and 18. WHQ holds 41, split 29 and 12. W100A holds 33, with 30 of those horizontal. Below that come WRD at 19, WD at 12 split evenly, WHQ 13 at 10, WHR at 9, W9A at 7, WFQ and W100 at 5 each, WH10CNC at 4 all horizontal, WHN 13 at 4, and W75, W9 and WHN 138C at 3 apiece. Look yours up by the exact plate designation, not the prefix: WHN, WHN 13 and WHN 138C are separate buckets here. Our own boring mill value page names TOS and TOS Varnsdorf among the brands buyers look for, for known accuracy, available parts and track record; the WH, WHN, WHQ and W100A boring mills in this book are all TOS VARNSDORF designs.

TOS Lathes and Vertical Turning: SN, SU and the SK Families

Turning is the biggest block: 473 listings are filed as CNC lathes, and with 56 vertical turret lathes and two smaller facets, 531 sit in a turning-named category. SU is the largest model family at 103, with 101 of those filed as CNC lathes, and SN is third at 88, 84 of them filed as lathes. Then SUA at 50 and SUS at 26, all lathes, SUI at 46 with 45 lathes, and SV at 17. Below those, SU 100 at 7, SN 63B at 6, and SN 40, SN 32 and TT at 5. On the vertical side, SKJ at 23 splits 13 vertical boring mills and 10 VTLs, SK at 18 splits nine and nine, SKQ at 11 leans VTL, and 18 of the 19 SKIQ listings, a TOSHULIN model, land across vertical boring, VTL and lathe facets. SK machines are filed under both vertical boring mill and VTL, so either search finds them.

TOS Cylindrical Grinders and Gear Machines

CNC grinding machines is the second largest category at 355 listings, plus four tool and cutter grinders, and the B-series families are the most category-pure in the book. BUB at 51, BUC at 47, BUA at 28, BRH at 17, BPH at 13, BU at 12, BUAJ and BUT at 11 each, BPV at 6, UB, 2UD and BDU at 5 each, and BN, BU 28, URB, BHS and BHE at 3 each are all filed under CNC grinding machines, with only BHU breaking the pattern at 42 of 43. That is measured off the catalog, which is why a B-prefix plate is quick for us to place. Gear machinery is 94 listings. FO leads at 20, 19 of them gear machines, then OFA at 19 and OHA at 14, both filed entirely under gear machinery. A BUC 85C/4000 MULTI here carries TOS Celakovice on its brand line, typed as a universal cylindrical grinder.

What Moves the Number on a Used TOS

Here is what makes a TOS different from most brands we quote. 1,665 of the 2,134 listings carry no build year at all. Only 469 do, and among those the oldest is from 1969 and the newest from 2026. The data plate is the fastest way to place a TOS, and a missing year is normal rather than a problem. The second number that matters: 2,073 distinct model designations across 2,134 listings, so nearly every unit gets scoped on its own. Production spread also means control generation and any retrofit work weigh as much as the iron, and an early-end and a late-end machine are different conversations under the same designation. Beyond that, the determinants are the usual ones: brand, model, year, condition and control type. Photos speed the evaluation but are not required. Jason Puuri weighs these himself rather than running a formula, and an offer typically comes back within 24 to 48 hours.

Selling a TOS Outright, and Clearing the Rest of the Floor

MTE buys outright. We are not a broker, an auction platform or a consignment and listing service, so you are selling to us rather than waiting on us to find a third party. No listing, and the offer comes directly from us. We can arrange rigging, crating and freight in all 50 states, and we can arrange the pickup. Running, idle or already decommissioned all get quoted, one machine or a full facility. TOS is already named on our boring mill sell page under the brands we commonly buy, so a WHN or a W100A is no exception case. Machine Tool Exchange is an affiliate of Superior Machine and Tool, buying and selling industrial machinery since 2012. Mixed floors work the same way: we buy Fanuc, Mazak, Haas, Okuma, Doosan, DMG MORI, Amada, Toshiba and Makino equipment too, and it goes on the same quote and pickup schedule as your TOS machines.

Ready to sell your machine? Tell us what you have and get a competitive offer in 24-48 hours. We can arrange the removal, rigging and logistics, and the truck to move it.

Common questions

Who buys used TOS machines?

Machine Tool Exchange buys TOS equipment nationwide, directly from the owners. We are not a broker, and TOS is named on our boring mill sell page under the brands we buy.

Do you buy TOS WHN and W100A horizontal boring mills?

Yes, and WHN is the deepest boring-mill run in this book. 101 WHN and 33 W100A listings sit here, and 283 of the 2,134 are horizontal boring mills.

Do you buy TOS SN and SU lathes?

Yes. SU is the largest family in this book at 103 and SN is the next largest lathe family at 88, with 473 of the 2,134 listings filed as CNC lathes.

Do you buy TOS BUB and BUC cylindrical grinders?

Yes. 51 BUB and 47 BUC listings sit in this book, and every one is filed under CNC grinding machines, out of 355 TOS grinders in total.

My TOS has no year on the data plate. Will you still buy it?

Yes. Most TOS listings here carry no build year, 1,665 of the 2,134, so a missing year is normal. The plate model and serial are enough to place it.

How much is a used TOS machine worth?

It depends on model, build year if the plate carries one, condition, control type and tooling. Send those details and we send a market-based offer, typically in 24 to 48 hours.

Do you buy TOS gear hobbing machines?

Yes. 94 gear machines sit in this book, including 19 OFA and 14 OHA listings, and we buy gear hobbers, shapers, grinders and shaving machines in any condition.

Who makes TOS machines?

Several separate Czech companies build machines under the TOS name. TOS VARNSDORF, in Varnsdorf, builds horizontal boring mills and machining centres. TOSHULIN, known until 1996 as TOS Hulín, builds vertical lathes, and TOS KUŘIM – OS became part of it in 2025. TOS Olomouc builds knee-type and CNC milling machines, and TOS Hostivař in Prague builds universal and surface grinders. When you sell a TOS, tell us which works is named on the plate, because each builder's machines are priced on their own line.

Are TOS Varnsdorf and TOS Čelákovice the same company?

No. TOS VARNSDORF's own history says the Varnsdorf works was administratively part of TOS Čelákovice n.p. for a few months in 1949, then gained independence in 1950 under the name TOS Varnsdorf n.p. Since then it has built horizontal boring mills on its own. We found no current TOS Čelákovice website to read, so a TOS gear machine in our listings, such as an OFA or FO hobber, is quoted from its plate: the model, the serial number and the condition.

When was the TOS W100A first built?

TOS VARNSDORF completed the first version of its standard W 100 A horizontal boring machine in 1970 and started serial production in 1978. Its history says the machine was then built in various modifications for as much as 25 years, so W100A plates cover a wide span of build dates and controls. When you sell one, send the serial number and say whether the control is original or has been retrofitted, because two W100As can be decades apart.

How old is the TOS WHN 13 design?

TOS VARNSDORF began developing its first numerically controlled boring machines in 1963, starting with the WHN 9 A and following with the WHN 11 and WHN 13. Serial production of the WHN 13 NC began in 1971, and Varnsdorf calls the WHN 13 its best-selling numerically controlled horizontal boring machine of the past decades. A WHN 13/15 is still in its products guide, so a WHN 13 for sale could be a 1970s machine or a recent one; the serial number tells us which.

Thinking about selling TOS Machines?

Most TOS listings here carry no build year, so the plate is where a TOS quote starts, and any retrofit or overhaul paperwork comes next. SU lathes and WHN boring mills come through most, at 103 and 101, and they are entirely different machines, which is why we ask for the designation first.
