Specs That Matter on a Milling Machine
X, Y, and Z travel defines the working envelope, so that comes first, along with table length and width. Spindle taper, top spindle speed, and motor power tell us what materials and cutting loads the machine was built for. If it carries an automatic tool changer, note the capacity and control brand too.
What Helps Us Move Fast
Have the control type, spindle specifications, and any retrofit history written down. Large bed and gantry mills are often built into the floor of the shop, so include photos of the column, way covers, and the clearance around the machine. Floor-mounted and pit-mounted machines take more planning to remove than a standard vertical mill.

Fadal and Hurco, and Where Compact Mills Fit
Fadal and Hurco round out the brands we buy most often beyond the Tos and Zimmermann machines that dominate our current inventory, both known for compact, affordable VMCs that shops run hard for years. These smaller machines get evaluated the same way as a large gantry mill, on travel, spindle taper, and control type, just at a different scale. A Fadal or Hurco doesn't need premium spindle hours or a rebuild history to be worth a call. Because these machines are common and relatively inexpensive to rig, they tend to move faster through our process than a large-format mill, less coordination on the pickup side, and a simpler evaluation since there's usually plenty of recent comparable activity to reference. Spindle taper on these compact machines is usually BT40 or CT40 depending on the specific model and era, which affects tooling compatibility for the next owner, and a machine with a documented tool changer capacity, 20 versus 30-plus stations for example, tends to draw more interest from a shop planning to run varied work. Control type matters too, a Fadal running its own proprietary control is a narrower buyer pool than a Hurco with a more widely known conversational control, which is one of several factors, alongside travel and spindle condition, that shape where the number lands.
CNC Knee Mills and Retrofit Machines
Not every CNC mill started life as one. Manual knee mills retrofitted with a CNC control, and older machines that have been through a spindle or way rebuild, count toward what we purchase alongside factory-built CNC machines. A retrofit gets evaluated on the quality of the conversion and the control installed, not just the age of the base casting, so a well-done retrofit can be worth more than a tired original CNC unit of the same vintage. What we look at most closely on a retrofit is who did the conversion and whether the ways and screws were reworked as part of the job, a retrofit built on a worn-out base casting is a different machine than one where the mechanicals were rebuilt at the same time. We also see quite a few Bridgeport-style knee mills that were retrofitted decades ago and have been running steadily since, these older retrofits are usually simpler 2-axis or 2.5-axis conversions rather than full 3-axis simultaneous machines, and we price them closer to a manual mill with a digital readout than to a modern factory-built CNC bed mill. Note whether the retrofit control is still supported with parts and software updates, since an obsolete retrofit control can be a bigger limiting factor than the mechanical condition of the machine itself.
Hermle, Chevalier, and the Rest of Our Milling Brands
Beyond Tos, Zimmermann, and the compact Fadal and Hurco lines, we buy milling machines from Hermle, Chevalier, and G&L. Hermle mills tend to be higher-precision 5-axis machines that come through less often than a standard 3-axis bed mill, so we evaluate them individually rather than against a generic milling-machine number. Chevalier's lineup leans toward more affordable manual and CNC bed mills that many toolrooms run alongside larger production equipment, and G&L milling machines we see are usually large-format, closer in scale to the gantry and floor-type machines already in our inventory than to a compact VMC. Because a 5-axis Hermle and a large-format G&L serve completely different shops, one precision mold work, the other structural fabrication, we don't apply a single milling-machine formula across the category, each brand and configuration gets scoped against machines that actually compete with it in the used market.
