Mazak HCN-4000
Manufacturer specifications, what it is built to do, the years we have seen them listed, what tooling fits, and what to check on one. MTE also buys them outright.
What the Mazak HCN-4000 is
The Mazak HCN-4000 is a CNC horizontal machining center — a machine for production milling with a horizontal spindle and pallet changer, so one pallet runs while the next is being loaded — chips fall clear and the machine runs unattended. The manufacturer publishes a pallet size of 15.750 in / 400 mm. This one is specified with a pallet changer: one pallet runs while the next is loaded.
What it is built to do
From the figures the manufacturer publishes, a Mazak HCN-4000 suits:
- one 15.750 in / 400 mm pallet cutting while the next is loaded
- CAT No.40 tooling at up to 12000 rpm
Selling a used Mazak HCN-4000
The spindle is the first thing to settle on an HCN-4000. Mazak offered four integral motor spindles for it: the standard 40-taper unit at 12,000 rpm, a high-torque 14,000 rpm version, a semi high-speed 18,000 rpm version and an HSK high-speed unit at 30,000 rpm. Mazak describes the standard one as giving power and speed for general machining. Read the spindle plate, or the top speed set in the control, and open the listing with that spindle's name.
Mazak gives the high-torque 14,000 rpm spindle 88 ft-lbs of torque on a continuous rating and up to 223 ft-lbs, and it aims the 18,000 and 30,000 rpm versions at aluminum and other nonferrous parts. It says the high-torque version is there to raise metal removal rates on hard to machine materials. A shop that cuts steel and a shop that cuts aluminum will read the same model name in different ways, so say what material this machine has mostly cut.
Mazak fitted 40 magazine positions as standard and offered magazines of 60, 80, 120 or 160 positions, plus Tool Hive magazines of 180, 240 or 330 positions, and it says the larger capacity lets a shop run unattended over long periods. Count pockets, give the magazine type, and say how many toolholders come with it. A unit with a Tool Hive should say so in its heading, not in a footnote.
Mazak's October 2016 release says the HCN-4000 was then fitted with its new MAZATROL SmoothG CNC, with functions such as High Gain Feed Forward Control, Variable Acceleration Control and Intelligent Pocket Milling. Photograph the control's name and the software version screen. A unit built before that release may carry an earlier MAZATROL, and a buyer will want to know which one this is. The release also says the PMC cell software works within the SmoothG control, so confirm the control before describing the machine as cell ready.
That release also says a PALLETECH system for this model comes in one, two or three levels, run by PALLETECH Manufacturing Cell (PMC) software that looks ahead at up to a week of scheduled work and links to mobile devices. A cell can also hold different types of machines. If this machine served in a PALLETECH cell, say whether the racks, the extra pallets and the cell controller are in the sale, and give the total pallet count.
At IMTS 2016 Mazak showed an HCN-4000 milling, boring and honing a pump housing, with hone tooling developed with Sunnen and the Orbiturn function of the SmoothG control turning round features while the part stays still, and it notes that the orbital method uses standard tooling. The same release describes the rotary table as direct drive, which Mazak says shortens indexing time. If this unit has that function or the hone tooling, list both by name, along with any hone sizes that come with it.

Mazak HCN-4000 specifications
These are the manufacturer’s figures for this model as currently published. A machine built years ago may differ in control generation and in options, which is exactly why the questions below matter when you sell one.

What fits a Mazak HCN-4000
Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.
40-taper toolholders
This is a 40-taper spindle — the 7:24 steep taper that CAT-40, BT-40 and DIN 69871 (SK-40) holders all share. They share the taper and nothing else that matters: the retention knob and the flange form differ between those standards, so holders do not swap between them without changing pull studs. Knowing which standard a machine was tooled for is worth doing before the holders are packed.

Pallets and fixturing
Fixtures, tombstones and spare pallets are cut for a pallet of this size and do not transfer to another machine. On a horizontal they are a large share of what is being sold, so count them before quoting.

What years the Mazak HCN-4000 was built
Across the units we have tracked, build years run from 2000 to 2024. Observed across 25 marketplaces, not a manufacturer build record.
Mazak HCN-4000 machines on the market now
We track listings across 25 used-machinery marketplaces, and every competitor in this market is one of them, so this is a view none of them can produce for themselves. Right now there are 9 units of this exact designation on the market, drawn from 7 independent sources, spanning model years 2000 to 2024. A seller is competing with those units, which is why condition, tooling and control generation decide the number.
We count only listings whose model is spelled as this machine’s own designation. Near spellings that may be a different variant are excluded rather than counted, so this is a floor on what is out there, not a total.
What affects the value of a used Mazak HCN-4000
- Build year. The units we tracked were built from 2000 to 2024, across 6 model years, most often 2011 (2 units).
- Against the published figures. The manufacturer gives max spindle speed 12000 rpm, spindle motor power 18.5 kW (25 HP), tool capacity 40 and X-axis travel 22".
What to check on a Mazak HCN-4000
The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.
- Two-pallet changer. Mazak's 2017 page lists a two-pallet changer as standard, on 15.750 in pallets. Cycle the changer several times with a loaded pallet, and list each pallet, tombstone and fixture that the buyer gets with it. The same page names automation for Mazak's PALLETECH System among the model's features, so note any cell hookup on the machine even when no cell is attached.
- SmoothC or SmoothG on the screen. Mazak's model page in 2021 gives the control type as SmoothC, though the 2016 release cited above names SmoothG. Read the name on the control itself rather than taking either one from the paperwork, and put the software version beside it.
- CAT or BT taper. Mazak's model page called the taper No 40 in 2021 and BT40 in 2024, and the current spec page reads CAT No.40. Read the taper from the spindle or the machine's papers, and record which pull studs the holders use.
- Tool limits on today's build. Mazak's spec page for the current HCN-4000 build allows tools up to 4 in across, 7 in with the neighboring pockets empty, 17 in long from the gauge line and 26 lbs. The same page rates the spindle at 18.5 kW (25 HP) at 40% ED and 15 kW (20 HP) continuous, with 82 N·m of torque at 40% ED, and puts the pallet top 3 in to 28 in from the spindle center. Older units may differ, so measure the largest tools this shop has loaded.
- Travels and part height. Travels on the 2017 page: 22.05 in for X, and 25.20 in for both Y and Z, with workpieces up to 35.430 in tall. Drive each axis to both limits and confirm the soft limits match those figures.
- HCN-4000 or HCN-4000 NEO. Mazak's 2024 site gives the next-generation HCN-4000 NEO a page of its own, with five spindle choices, 18000 rpm in its spec table and an optional 5-pallet changer or MPP system. If the plate says NEO, describe the machine from that page, because the four-spindle list in these notes belongs to the earlier HCN-4000.
- Spindle run-up time. Mazak gives 1.3 seconds to top speed for the standard spindle and 1.5 seconds for the optional ones, with rapids of 2,362 ipm and 1G acceleration on every axis. Time a start from rest to full speed and write the figure beside the spindle type.
