What the maker publishes about the current Makino F5

Makino's F5 is a vertical machining center with X, Y and Z axes, laid out without overhangs on large castings. Travels are 35.4" in X, 19.7" in Y and 17.7" in Z. The table is 39.4" x 19.7", the largest workpiece is 39.4" long, 19.7" wide and 17.7" tall, and table load capacity is 2,204 pounds. The axes use fine pitch ball screws of 8 mm, with scale feedback of 0.05 micron as standard equipment. The spindle is a two-range design that reaches 20,000 rpm and mounts an HSK-63A taper. Its temperature control system uses core cooling, under-race and jacket methods. The lower range serves roughing, while the higher range is used with small tools on fine features. The tool changer is a 30-tool magazine, and a 60-tool magazine is an option.

What the Makino F5 is used for

Makino built the F5 for high-speed and hard milling of 3D contoured shapes that need tight tolerance blends and matches, and it names die and mold work and medical parts, among them dies, cavities and cores, as the jobs it is meant for.

What fits a Makino F5

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

HSK-A63 tooling

This machine takes HSK-A63 tooling — a hollow-shank interface, not a 7:24 steep taper. CAT, BT and SK holders do not fit it, and HSK holders of a different size do not fit each other.

Derived from Spindle taper: HSK-63A

What to check on a Makino F5

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies Makino Professional 6 Control (FANUC hardware) for this model. Units we have tracked run 2010 to 2021; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 20,000 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of HSK-63A. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 35.4", Y 19.7" and Z 17.7" of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 30-tool magazine. Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
  • Table. The manufacturer gives a table size of 39.4" x 19.7" and a table load of 2,204 pounds. Check the table and its T-slots for damage.
  • Work envelope. The manufacturer gives maximum workpiece size 39.4" long x 19.7" wide x 17.7" tall. Measure your largest part, with its fixture, against that.

When the Makino F5 was built

Makino introduced the F5 in March 2010 as the larger of the two machines in its new F-Series of vertical machining centers, beside the F3, both run by its Professional 5 control.
