Who Builds Hermle Machining Centers
Hermle machining centers come from Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG, headquartered in Gosheim in southwestern Germany. Berthold Hermle started the business there in 1938 to make bolts and machine screws, and on the company's own account milling machine production began in 1957. This page is about that machine builder; the Hermle clocks that crowd the search results for the name are not what we buy.
Hermle moved into numerical control in stages. It presented its first universal milling machine in 1972, put numerically controlled milling machines into production in 1975 and began producing CNC-controlled milling machines in 1978. The firm took its present name, Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG, and went public in 1990.
Where Hermle Machines Are Built
Hermle states plainly that it manufactures its products in Germany. Besides the Gosheim headquarters, it lists plants at Zimmern ob Rottweil and Burladingen. Gosheim gained a production facility for assembling large machines and automated plants in 2014, Zimmern ob Rottweil added sheet metal production in 2020, and the enlarged Zimmern site opened in 2024. Hermle counts more than 1,600 employees and more than 30,000 of its machines installed worldwide.
In North America, Hermle's US branch became an independent company, Hermle Machine Co. LLC, in 2001. A service and sales centre for North America followed in 2003, and a service branch in Arizona opened in 2023. The machines themselves come from the German plants.
Hermle's Timeline, From Bolts to Machining Centers
Selected milestones from the company history Hermle publishes, which runs to 2025:
| Year | On Hermle's own timeline |
|---|---|
| 1938 | Founded in Gosheim as a bolt and machine screw maker |
| 1957 | Milling machine production begins |
| 1972 | First Hermle universal milling machine presented |
| 1975 | Numerically controlled milling machines in production |
| 1978 | CNC-controlled milling machines in production |
| 1990 | Becomes Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG and lists its shares |
| 1998 | HLS Hermle Systemtechnik founded to automate Hermle machines |
| 2001 | US branch becomes the independent Hermle Machine Co. LLC |
| 2014 | Gosheim facility for large machines and automated plants opens |
| 2025 | New application centre under construction at Gosheim |
All entries are condensed from the milestones list on Hermle's own company page.
Hermle's GEN2 Lineup and Its Two Controls
Hermle's current overview of its 3-axis and 5-axis machining centers lists nine models, every one carrying the GEN2 suffix, in two lines. The High-Performance Line runs from the C 12, which Hermle calls the most compact machine in that line, through the C 22, C 32, C 42 and C 52 to the C 62, its premium model. The Performance Line holds the C 250, Hermle's entry-level model, the larger C 400 and the C 650. Optional MT technology adds simultaneous turning to milling, which is why names such as C 42 MT turn up on plates.
On the C 42 GEN2, Hermle offers two controls, the Heidenhain TNC7 and the Siemens SINUMERIK ONE. Hermle also says the GEN2 update reworked the electrics, drives and sensors but left the C 42's mechanics unaltered, so an earlier C 42 and a GEN2 share the same mechanical base.
Control, Automation and Capacity on a Used Hermle
Two Hermles with the same model number can be worth quite different amounts. The control is the first split: a Heidenhain machine and a Siemens machine suit different shops, and the control generation helps date the machine. Capacity comes next. A C 42 that carries the MT mill-turn option, or a big C 52, which Hermle rates for workpieces up to 2,000 kg in 5 axes, is priced on what it can hold and do.
Automation moves the number most. Hermle sells the C 42 with the PW 850 pallet changer, HS flex handling and its RS robot systems, so a machine that leaves with its pallets, gripper or robot is worth more than the bare machine. Tell us what is bolted on before we quote.
C-Series Plates Versus Hermle's Current Names
The Hermle strings that recur in our catalog, such as C600U, C800U, C60U, C800V and C30U, and the UWF family alongside them, are not names on Hermle's current overview, which lists GEN2 machines only. So a model name on its own does not tell us which build you have. Read the full string off the plate, suffix letters included, rather than matching the machine to a name in today's lineup.
Hermle Service, or Selling Outright
Hermle runs its own service organisation. More than 200 people work in service roles, its subsidiaries and representatives cover over 50 countries, and it promises spare parts for new or old models and a field service team for the life of the machine. Its used-machine desk also takes calls from owners who want to sell a Hermle or have one restored.
If you mean to keep a Hermle cutting, that factory route suits it. If the machine has to leave the floor, we buy it outright, and records of Hermle service visits or a factory restoration help the offer.
What the 143 Hermle Listings Actually Are
Every one of the 143 listings in this hub carries the Hermle nameplate and nothing else. The catalog files them as 83 Metal Cutting, 34 CNC Vertical Machining Centers, 17 CNC 5-Axis Machining Centers, 6 CNC Milling Machines, 2 CNC Miscellaneous Machines, and 1 CNC Horizontal Machining Center. That split is complete and adds to 143 exactly. Metal Cutting is the catalog's generic parent bucket rather than a machine type, so those 83 rows are the listings never filed under a narrower heading, and no specific machine type is a majority here. Across the 143 listings sit 103 distinct model designations, 83 of which appear exactly once: twenty designations repeat, and the rest is a long tail found only by typing the exact characters off the plate. Build years run from 1985 to 2019 on the 98 listings that record a year. The other 45 carry none, so read no decade pattern into that span.
The C-Designation Machining Centers
The C designations account for eleven of the twelve model families the catalog counts here at two listings or more. In this hub the model families run C600U at 7 listings, C800U at 5, C60U at 4, C800 at 4, then C800V, C20U, C22U and C30 at 3 each, with C42U, C30U and C40U at 2 apiece. Spelling is the thing to know before you search. Our catalog holds one designation under several separate strings, so at least 11 listings carry a C800V designation across C800 V, C 800 V and C800V, at least 10 carry a C600U spelling, at least 8 a C800U spelling, at least 5 a C22U spelling and at least 4 a C30U spelling. Those are floors, not totals. The C machines are also spread across the catalog's own categories rather than sitting in one bucket: the seven C600U listings file as four Metal Cutting, two VMC and one 5-axis, while all four C800 listings file as VMC.
UWF, the Largest Model Family in the Hub
UWF is the largest single model family here at 34 of the 143 listings. The catalog files those 34 as 23 Metal Cutting, 6 CNC Vertical Machining Centers and 5 CNC Milling Machines, and that is the whole split. Read that filing closely, because it is what our catalog actually knows about them: we place a UWF by where the listing sits in the catalog, not by a specification we cannot confirm off the data plate. Spellings inside the family are fragmented, which is why the individual model counts look small next to the family number. The designations that repeat, written exactly as the catalog carries them, are UWF 902 H, UWF 900 E and UWF; the catalog also holds single listings under UWF 1200 RT, UWF 900 E - HTC 32, UWF1000, UWF 1202 H and UWF 1001 H. If you are selling one, the string on the plate is the fastest way for us to place it.
What Determines the Offer on a Used Hermle
Jason Puuri handles final valuations and the closing conversation with sellers himself, which is why the details you send matter more than any formula. Model and designation come first, then build year: a 1985 machine and a 2019 machine are two different conversations under one nameplate, and this hub spans exactly that range. After that, spindle hours, control generation, and the axis configuration, including whether a rotary or trunnion runs simultaneous or positional. MTE buys both and prices the difference rather than treating 3+2 as a lesser machine. Whether the machine still holds tolerance, what tooling and fixturing come with it, and any pallet or automation attached all move the offer. So does what removal looks like on your floor and what re-installation looks like at the other end, since foundation work and rigging access are part of the job. Photos of the control screen and the work envelope help. They are not required to start.
The 17 Filed as 5-Axis, and the Rest of the Book
Seventeen of the 143 listings are filed as CNC 5-Axis Machining Centers, and 17 is the number. The catalog's family splits tie five of the 17 to a named model family, two C60U, one C800U, one C600U and one C30, and record no family for the other 12. Outside the C and UWF groups the book gets specific. The catalog carries U 630 T on four listings, C 600 V on two, and single listings for C 1200 V, C 30 U Dynamic, C 40U DYNAMIC, C400, C30V, U630M, U, Z360K and FWH 630, plus one row whose model string is literally MILLING. We carry those as written rather than tidying them into a product line. The smaller buckets round it out: 6 CNC Milling Machines, 2 CNC Miscellaneous Machines and 1 CNC Horizontal Machining Center. What we buy is not capped by this page, so a Hermle matching none of these designations is still one we will quote.
Selling One Hermle or Clearing a Floor
Machine Tool Exchange buys direct. We are an affiliate of Superior Machine Tools in Lansing, Michigan, and we purchase outright: no consignment, no listing, no waiting on an auction date. Send the model string, the year if the plate carries one, hours if you track them, and the control; a quote comes back in 24 to 48 hours. We can arrange rigging, crating and freight, and arrange the pickup, in all 50 states. A Hermle does not have to be running for us to make an offer: machines sitting idle, waiting on a repair decision, or coming out during a changeover all get quoted. One machine or a full cell goes on one quote and one pickup schedule. Proof the company owns the machine outright, rather than still paying it off under a lease, speeds closing. If the Hermle sits on a mixed floor, we also buy Makino, DMG MORI, Mazak, Okuma and Haas on the same visit.

Common questions
How do I sell a used Hermle machine?
Send the model string off the data plate, the build year if it carries one, and spindle hours if you track them. A quote comes back within 24 to 48 hours, and if you take it we can arrange rigging, freight and the pickup.
Do you buy used Hermle 5-axis machining centers?
Yes. Seventeen of the 143 Hermle listings in this hub are filed as CNC 5-Axis Machining Centers, and we buy both simultaneous and 3+2 positional machines. Tell us how the rotary or trunnion is set up and we scope it from there.
Which Hermle models do you see most?
UWF is the largest family in this hub at 34 of the 143 listings. After that come the C designations: C600U, C800U, C60U, C800, C800V, C20U, C22U and C30, with C42U, C30U and C40U repeating as well.
Who buys used Hermle machines?
We do, directly. Machine Tool Exchange is a buyer, not a listing service, an auction platform or a broker taking a cut. You get one quote, one contact through the whole process, and the pickup arranged for you in all 50 states.
Will you buy a Hermle that is idle or not running?
Yes. Running and under power is the simplest case, but we also buy machines sitting idle after a job ended and machines needing spindle, rotary or control work. Tell us what is wrong up front so the offer fits the machine.
Do you buy a single Hermle or a whole shop of them?
Either. One UWF coming off the floor and twenty machines from a full plant clearance run the same way: one quote, one contact, one pickup schedule. Each machine is still scoped on its own model, year and condition.
Do you buy on consignment, and who arranges the pickup?
We can arrange the pickup. We purchase outright, so there is no consignment, no listing period and no auction date to wait on. The machine is ours once it is loaded, and you are not waiting on a downstream buyer.
Where are Hermle machining centers made?
In Germany. Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG says it manufactures its products there, at its Gosheim headquarters and at plants in Zimmern ob Rottweil and Burladingen. A Hermle on a US floor was shipped over from those plants; Hermle's American company, Hermle Machine Co. LLC, looks after sales and service here.
When did Hermle start building CNC milling machines?
Hermle's own timeline puts the start of production of CNC-controlled milling machines in 1978, three years after its first numerically controlled milling machines in 1975. The Gosheim company had been building milling machines since 1957, so a manual Hermle mill can be older than either date.
What is the Hermle C 42?
The C 42 is a 5-axis machining center from Hermle's High-Performance Line, sold today as the C 42 GEN2, with traverse paths of 800 x 800 x 550 mm and a maximum table load of 1400 kg. The C 42 MT version makes it a milling and turning centre. Hermle builds it with either a Heidenhain TNC7 or a Siemens SINUMERIK ONE control.
Are Hermle machines made in the USA?
No. Hermle builds its machining centers in Germany, and its American operation is sales and service: the US branch became the independent Hermle Machine Co. LLC in 2001, a North American service and sales centre opened in 2003, and Hermle added a service branch in Arizona in 2023.
Thinking about selling Hermle Machines?
This is a 143-listing Hermle book: 34 UWF filed as 23 Metal Cutting, 6 VMC and 5 CNC Milling Machines, 17 listings filed as 5-axis, and at least 11 carrying a C800V spelling across three strings, with recorded years from 1985 to 2019. Send the string off your plate and Jason Puuri will scope it himself.
