Haas names the VF-1 as the foundation of its VF Series: a vertical machining center with three axes and a 40-taper spindle. X motion is 20.00 in, while Y moves 16.00 in and Z moves 20.00 in. Workholding goes on a 26.0 in by 14.0 in table cut with 3 standard T-slots. The evenly spread load limit is 3000 lb. Spindle nose height above the table is 24.0 in at most and 4.0 in at least. 40-taper toolholders
This is a 40-taper spindle — the 7:24 steep taper that CAT-40, BT-40 and DIN 69871 (SK-40) holders all share. They share the taper and nothing else that matters: the retention knob and the flange form differ between those standards, so holders do not swap between them without changing pull studs. Knowing which standard a machine was tooled for is worth doing before the holders are packed. The manufacturer names BT (JIS/MAS 403) for this machine.

- Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 8100 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
- Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 22.4 kW (30.0 hp) of spindle power and 122.0 Nm @ 2000 rpm (90.0 ft-lbf @ 2000 rpm) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
- Spindle taper. The manufacturer gives a spindle taper of CT40 | BT40 | HSK-A63. Check it for fretting and that the drawbar holds a tool.
- Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 508 mm (20.00 in), Y 406 mm (16.00 in) and Z 508 mm (20.00 in) of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
- Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 25.4 m/min (1000 ipm). Measure the backlash on each axis.
- Tool changer. The manufacturer gives the tool capacity as 20. Cycle every pocket and watch for a hesitation.
- Tool-change time. The manufacturer gives a tool-to-tool time of 4.20 s and a chip-to-chip time of 4.50 s. Time a tool change against that.
- Table. The manufacturer gives a table load of 1361 kg (3000 lb). Check the table and its T-slots for damage.

Haas's history page says the company started work on the VF-1, its first vertical machining center, in 1987, finished the first prototypes in 1988 and introduced the machine at IMTS in Chicago that year.
