What the maker published about the Haas MDC-500

Haas calls the MDC-500 a mill/drill center that has two work stations, and its archived specification page shows a pallet changer with 2 load stations whose pallets measure 20 x 12.75 in and take 700 lb (318 kg) each; a pallet swap takes 4.7 sec. Travels are 20 in on X, 14 in on Y and 20 in on Z (508, 356 and 508 mm). The 40 taper spindle accepts CT or BT holders, is belt driven, and reaches 10,000 rpm, powered by a vector drive of 20 hp (14.9 kW) that gives 37 ft-lb at 2000 rpm. Rapids are 1000 ipm (25.4 m/min) and feed while cutting is limited to 833 in/min. Its side-mount changer, with 24+1 pockets, swaps tools in 2.2 sec on average, or 4.8 sec chip to chip. Rigid tapping and a built-in chip conveyor are standard, coolant fills a 55 gal tank, and the mill weighs 14000 lb.

What the Haas MDC-500 is used for

Haas's 2004 launch release points the MDC-500 at long runs of small parts, where cycles are short and parts go in and out often: the operator reloads one of its two fixture stations while the machine drills, taps and mills on the other.
