Makino Milling Machine Co. was founded in Japan in 1937, and nearly ninety years later the name still means one thing on a shop floor: accuracy. Makino is not a volume builder and never tried to be. It builds machines for shops that have to hold micron-level tolerances and fine surface finishes on hard material, which is why you find Makino iron in aerospace, medical, die and mold, powertrain, semiconductor and high-end job shops far more often than in general fabrication. North American sales, parts and service run out of Makino's headquarters in Mason, Ohio.

What Makino Is Known For
Three engineering choices explain most of Makino's reputation.
Thermal stability. Makino cools what moves. Core-cooled spindles, chilled ballscrews and coolant routed through the casting keep the machine from growing as it warms. That is what lets a shop start a shift and still hold size at the end of it without chasing offsets.
Motion control built for finish. Makino's SGI look-ahead motion control, short for Super Geometric Intelligence, was designed for high-speed contouring on three-dimensional surfaces. It is why die and mold shops run Makino for hard milling and finishing, where the alternative is hours of bench polishing.
Rigidity and coolant delivery under load. The heavier Makino frames and the high-pressure through-spindle coolant packages are aimed squarely at hard metal: stainless, Inconel, titanium. On the titanium machines that capability is packaged as ADVANTiGE.
a-Series and MC-Series Horizontal Machining Centers
The a-series is the line most people mean when they say "a Makino." These are horizontal machining centers built for pallet-fed production: the a40 and a51 at the compact end, then the a61, a71, a77, a81, a88 and the larger a100 frames, plus the nx generation that replaced much of the range, including the a51nx, a61nx and a81nx. The older MC-series horizontals that came before them are still cutting parts in plenty of shops.
The differences a buyer actually prices are frame size and pallet size, spindle interface and taper (BT40 runs across much of the range, with HSK on the newer machines), tool magazine capacity, and whether the machine came with a twin-pallet changer or lives in a pallet pool. A pallet-pool cell is a different asset from a standalone machine and should be quoted as one, with the pallets and fixtures counted. Horizontals of any make belong on the HMC hub.
V, F, S and PS Vertical Machining Centers
Makino's verticals carry the same precision story into a smaller footprint, and they split into distinct jobs, not one line at several sizes.
- V-series, including the V33 and V77, are the high-speed verticals built for die and mold work, hard milling and graphite electrode cutting. This is the line mold shops ask for by name.
- F-series, the F3 and F5, are general precision verticals built stiff for chatter-free cutting on the tight-tolerance contoured geometry common in die, mold and medical work.
- S-series, the S33 and S56, are high-speed verticals aimed more at production part machining than at mold cavities.
- PS-series, the PS95 and PS105, is Makino's more accessible vertical line, for general machining where a shop wants Makino build quality without a die and mold specification.
Verticals of any brand belong on the VMC hub.
D, DA, T and MAG Five-Axis Machines
Five-axis is where Makino sells into aerospace and medical, and where the machines get large and specialized.
- D-series, including the D200Z, D300 and D500, are five-axis machines built around a trunnion table for medical parts, precision components and complex mold work.
- DA-series, such as the DA300, pair five-axis capability with pallet automation for production work, as do the larger MCC-series machines like the MCC2013.
- T-series, the T1, T2 and T4, are large five-axis horizontals built for hard metal. The T1 handles material from stainless steel through Inconel, and the T2 and T4 are built for large titanium and titanium-alloy aerospace structure.
- MAG-series, the MAG1 and MAG3, are high-speed five-axis horizontals for aluminum monolithic aerospace parts, the MAG1 for parts up to roughly 1.5 meters and the MAG3 for larger and more complex structure.
These are the machines that come off the floor when an aerospace program ends or a line is decommissioned, and they are usually the most valuable single assets in the building. Five-axis machines of any make are on the 5-axis hub.
The EDM Range
The part of Makino that surprises people is that it is a serious EDM builder, not just a machining-center company.
On the sinker and ram side there is the current EDAF line, including the EDAF2 and EDAF3, and the long-running EDNC family, which runs from the EDNC6 and EDNC43 up through the EDNC65 and EDNC85. On wire, the U-series is the current line, including the U3, U6 and the larger U86, alongside the EDGE machines, the twin-head DUO and the older SP wire machines still in service.
Makino also builds dedicated graphite machining centers with sealed enclosures and dust extraction, which is why a single Makino tool room can cut the electrode and then burn the cavity. Controls, Automation and the Options That Change the Number
Makino runs its own Professional control, most commonly seen as Professional 3, 5 and 6, layered over Fanuc-based hardware. Control generation is one of the first things a used buyer checks, because it decides how current the machine feels to program, network and support.
Automation is the other big variable. Twin-pallet changers, pallet-pool systems, robot loading, and the pallets and fixtures that go with them are real value, and they are the items most often left out of a seller's description.
What a Makino Owner Should Know About Resale
The buyer pool is narrower and much more motivated. Far fewer shops genuinely need micron-level accuracy and Makino surface finish, but the ones that do will not accept a substitute and cannot always justify a new machine. That imbalance is what holds a used Makino firm, and it is also why a general auction is usually the wrong venue: the room may not hold a single buyer who understands the machine.
Six things move the number on a specific machine.
- Spindle hours and spindle condition. The high-precision spindle is the heart of what a buyer is paying for, so hours get asked before almost anything else. A rebuild with a date and a vendor on it is worth far more than "it runs fine."
- Whether it still holds tolerance. A recent ballbar or laser calibration report, or simply parts coming off the machine to print this week, settles a question that otherwise gets priced as risk.
- Control generation. Professional 5 and 6 machines read as current to the next shop. Older generations do not disqualify a machine, but they do narrow the pool.
- Automation and tooling. Pallet changer, pallet pool, fixtures, probing, high-pressure coolant, chip conveyor, tool holders. This is the most under-described part of a typical Makino listing.
- EDM specifics. On EDM, generator condition and hours, filtration, the wire path on a wire machine, and rotary or C-axis options all matter.
- Size, power and rigging reality. T-series and MAG-series machines and large pallet-pool cells are heavy, sometimes sit on a special foundation, and always need real riggers. That does not reduce what the machine is worth, but it narrows who can practically move it, which is why logistics matter more on a Makino than on a small vertical.
Documentation is the cheap lever. Manuals, parameter and ladder backups, tooling lists and maintenance records cost nothing to gather and remove exactly the uncertainty that otherwise gets priced against you.
