What the Toshiba BP-150.R22 is

The Toshiba BP-150.R22 is a CNC horizontal boring mill — a machine for boring, milling and drilling large, heavy workpieces — a quill or spindle feeding out on the W axis over a rotary table that carries tons. The manufacturer publishes a spindle diameter of 5.9 in (150 mm). This one is specified with a W axis: the quill or spindle feeds out independently of the column.

What it is built to do

From the figures the manufacturer publishes, a Toshiba BP-150.R22 suits:

  • boring 28 in (711.2 mm) deep on the quill without moving the column
  • workpieces up to the published 44,000 lb (20,000 kg), which on a machine this size is usually the binding constraint rather than the travels
  • bars and heads sized to a 5.9 in (150 mm) spindle

A note on the name. Toshiba Machine Co. renamed itself Shibaura Machine Co. on 1 April 2020, so the manufacturer’s own specification for this machine is published under Shibaura Machine even though the machine, the nameplate and the way everyone in the trade refers to it all still say Toshiba.

Selling a used Toshiba BP-150.R22

Shibaura publishes two BP-150 machines with the same 150 mm (5.9 in) spindle, and the table is what tells them apart. This R22 carries a 1,800 x 2,200 mm (71 x 87 in) table rated 44,000 lbs (20,000 kg), with 160 in of X and 120 in of Y. On the BP-150.R35 page the table measures 2,000 x 3,500 mm and is rated 25,000 kg, with 6,096 mm of X and 3,556 mm of Y. Put a tape on the table before you describe the machine.

Shibaura America's leaflet calls the BP-150.R22 a planer-type horizontal boring and milling machine with rotary table. Its figure for the spindle motor is AC 37/30 kW (AC 50/40 HP), 30 minute and continuous, and it gives the machine size as 5,677 mm high, 10,210 mm wide and 7,620 mm deep. The picture on that leaflet is a BP-150.R35, so take your own photos rather than borrowing it.

Two spindle heads appear on the maker's page for this model. One is the 200 mm (7.8 in) long nose spindle, a hardened milling spindle extended that far, with coolant through it. The other, an option, is a high-speed head with a smaller 110 mm (4.3 in) spindle on AC 35/30 HP, turning from 40 rpm up to 8,000. If the high-speed head is on the machine or sits beside it, say so, since a buyer sizes bars and holders to the spindle actually fitted.

Shibaura's Japanese page covers the BP-130.R22 and the BP-150.R22 together, so the plate and a measured spindle settle which one this is. That page lists the double pinion B-axis drive with a rotary scale as standard, a manual pendant box for hand work, a long stroke meant for long workpieces, and the TOSNUC999 control. Photograph the nameplate and the start screen on the CNC, and keep both pictures with the listing.

Shibaura names the BP series among its machines with a quill or bar axis, W, working alongside the column or ram on Z, with Z/W tracking of the tool point position. The maker also mentions spindle attachments, a U axis among them, that use the bar's extension to move the tool point. If a U axis head or another bar-driven attachment came with this machine, list it with its make and stroke.

The TOSNUC 999 on Shibaura's BTD, BTH and BP boring mills has a teach function: in manual mode the moves are turned into NC data and stored in the NC memory, and MDI work is stored the same way. A shop that taught its jobs like this keeps its part programs inside the control. Back them up to a card before the power is cut, and keep a printed list of the program names.

Shibaura America's leaflet fills in the rest of this R22's travel and spindle: 1,524 mm (60 in) of Z for the table's longitudinal move, and a 150 mm spindle turning 5 to 2,500 min-1. Its positioning figure on the three linear axes is ±0.008 mm (±0.0003 in), and for repeatability ±0.004 mm. Those are new machine figures, so ask for the most recent alignment or laser check and attach it.

This model's page lists a rotary milling function that machines a cylinder's outside and its ends in one continuous B indexing move, so no add-on NC rotary table is needed, with those surfaces programmed manually through cylindrical interpolation. A portable handwheel covering the three linear axes, the bar and the table is listed beside it. Turn the table slowly on the handwheel for a buyer, then run a short B arc from a program.

Toshiba Machine's Japanese spec sheet, archived in May 2013, prints the BP-130.R22 and the BP-150.R22 side by side, and only three rows split them. The 150 carries a 150 mm spindle where the 130 has 130 mm, a spindle motor of AC37/30 kW (30 minute and continuous) against AC22/18.5 kW, and a spindle nose reach of 609.6 to 2,133.6 mm from the table center against 812.8 to 2,336.8 mm. The motor plate is a second way to tell the two apart, so photograph it beside the nameplate.

On that sheet the magazine holds 38 tools as standard, with 60, 90 and 120 shown in brackets, and a footnote says a bracketed figure is a special specification option. Shibaura's later page for this R22 gives 60. Count the pockets in your magazine and put the number in the listing, since four sizes were offered and a buyer planning tooling wants the real one.

Toshiba Machine rates the table at 10,000 kg on that sheet and gives the whole machine, NC included, a mass of 44,000 kg. Keep that second figure apart from the 44,000 lb table rating in the US documents; one is the machine and the other is the load on its table. The sheet also gives the head 0 to 2,540 mm from the table top to the spindle center, which is the height range the spindle center covers above the table.

Positioning on X, Y and Z is given twice on the sheet: ±0.016 mm over the full length without linear scales and ±0.008 mm with them. The repeat figures are ±0.007 mm and ±0.004 mm on the same terms, and W is listed only without a scale, at ±0.012 mm for positioning and ±0.008 mm for repeat. Which pair applies to your unit depends on its scales, so name them, and attach the last laser or ballbar report if the shop kept one.

The sheet lists a height of 5,215 mm and a floor area of 7,620 x 10,210 mm, while the US leaflet gives 5,677 mm for the height. Measure your own machine from the floor to the top of the column, and the floor it takes with the magazine and the cabinets, and write both down for a buyer who has to fit it into a building. The paint is listed as a two tone of R4-383 (Munsell 5Y8.4/0.5) and N2.5, so note any repaint.

Toshiba Machine America's table type horizontal boring machine chart, archived in August 2004 and unchanged in its July 2008 copy, sets this model beside the BP-130.R22 and three P models: the BP-110.P20, BP-130.P40 and BP-150.P45. The chart prints no units. It gives the BP-150.R22 a 70.9 x 86.7 table, where the BP-150.P45 has 70 x 180 and the same 5.9 spindle entry. Take the model from the plate, never from the spindle size alone.

For the BP-150.R22 that chart's X entry is 140 with 160 in brackets, its Y entry 90 with 100 in brackets, and its W entry 28 with 15.7 in brackets. Its spindle speed reads 2500 with 8000 in brackets, and its spindle power 50/40 with 36/30 in brackets. Shibaura's current page gives 120 in of Y, more than either Y entry here, so measure X and Y end to end on the machine itself and give the lengths you found, in the unit you used.

Two of the P models on that chart carry larger capacity entries than this R22: 55000 for the BP-130.P40 and the BP-150.P45 against 44000 here, while the smaller BP-110.P20 reads 30000 with 40000 in brackets. When you copy a table load or a stroke from a printed chart, check that the row and the column you are reading belong to the BP-150.R22.

Toshiba Machine's February 1999 release for the BP-130.R22 lists the main features of this series. It names a built in rotary table in place of a plain long fixed table, six hydraulic cylinder clamps to hold the table, an air lift that doubles the table limit from 10 to 20 tonnes as an option, and a quill type spindle with oil mist cooling that reaches 8,000 rpm as an option, where earlier machines stopped at 2,500.

The same release names the TOSNUC 888 as the control, with a movable pendant as standard, while the series pages from 2013 on name the TOSNUC 999. Read the control's name off the screen or the cabinet before you list the machine. Ask whether your table has the air lift, since this series appears with both a 10 tonne and a 20 tonne table figure, and state which one applies.

Toshiba Machine's English page for the series, archived in April 2013, describes closed loop control of the X, Y, Z and B axes, with a rotary scale and 1 μm linear scales as standard. It lists the 200 mm long nose head as standard on the BP-150.R22 but only an option on the BP-130.R22, so a long nose on its own does not settle which model you have. Look on each slide for its scale and write down the make on the reading head if you can see it.

What fits a Toshiba BP-150.R22

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Boring bars and tooling

The spindle figure opposite sets the boring-bar class this machine works with, and it is the number a buyer of a boring mill asks for first. Bars, facing heads and angle heads are separate assets and are counted separately.

What years the Toshiba BP-150.R22 was built

Across the units we have tracked, build years run from 1996 to 2015. Observed across 25 marketplaces, not a manufacturer build record. The manufacturer specifies TOSNUC 999, so a unit on an older control is an early one or a retrofit.

We track listings across 25 used-machinery marketplaces, and every competitor in this market is one of them, so this is a view none of them can produce for themselves. Right now there are 9 units of this exact designation on the market, drawn from 4 independent sources, spanning model years 1996 to 2015. A seller is competing with those units, which is why condition, tooling and control generation decide the number.

We count only listings whose model is spelled as this machine’s own designation. Near spellings that may be a different variant are excluded rather than counted, so this is a floor on what is out there, not a total.

What affects the value of a used Toshiba BP-150.R22

  • Control. The manufacturer specifies TOSNUC 999.
  • Build year. The units we tracked were built from 1996 to 2015, across 6 model years.
  • Against the published figures. The manufacturer gives max spindle speed 2,500 rpm, tool capacity 60 tools, X-axis travel 160 in (4,064 mm) and Y-axis travel 120 in (3,048 mm).

What to check on a Toshiba BP-150.R22

The same list whichever side of the deal you are on.

  • Locate pin at each 90 degrees. The leaflet's accessory list gives table indexing to 0.0001 degree with a locate pin at every 90 degrees. Index to 0, 90, 180 and 270 and confirm the pin seats at each stop.
  • Sixty pot changer. Shibaura's spec page gives the ATC tool pod on this model as 60. Cycle the changer through every pot, then photograph the magazine loaded with the holders that stay.
  • Bar out to 711 mm. W stroke on the R22 is 28 in (711.2 mm). Feed the bar to the end of that stroke and back at a slow rate, and note anything that changes as it nears full extension.
  • Rapid over the long Y. Rapid for the bar is 5,000 mm/min and for the rotary table 500 deg/min, while X, Y and Z each reach 10,000 mm/min; cutting feed has a 6,000 mm/min ceiling. Take X, Y and Z through their whole travel at rapid; Y alone is 3,048 mm (120 in) here.
  • CAT 50 and the spindle clamp. This leaflet names CAT 50 as the taper and includes an auto spindle clamp unit. Read the taper on a holder, and clamp the spindle at a few places along its stroke and watch for creep.
  • Scales on four axes. This model's page offers optional scale feedback for the X, Y and Z linear axes and the B rotary axis. The leaflet's accessory list, by contrast, names HEIDENHAIN feedback scales for all three linear axes and B. Find the scale housing on each slide and the rotary scale at the table, and record what is there.
  • Cooling unit and covers. The leaflet's machine list includes a spindle cooling unit, an auto power shut down, and safety covers on the operator side and the ATC side. Start the cooling unit, and see that both covers are on the machine.
  • Renishaw probes. Two Renishaw options appear on this model's page: a radio probe for touch measuring, run by Shibaura's software and checked on a calibration block, and an RTS unit for tool length that writes the offset. If either one is fitted, power it up and confirm the receiver sees it.
  • Leaflet accessory list. The leaflet's accessories add a high power spindle drive motor, an item marked CTS, a table reference piece and a manual operation box with a current position monitor. Tick each one off against the machine and list those present.
  • Spindle motor plate. On the 2013 sheet this model's spindle motor is AC37/30 kW, and the BP-130.R22 motor is AC22/18.5 kW. Read the plate on the motor and photograph it.
  • Eleven T slots. Eleven slots, each 22 mm wide on a 160 mm pitch, make up the table top. Count them, measure one, and list the T bolts and clamps that stay with the table.
  • BT50 or CAT 50 holders. The Japanese sheet lists MAS BT50 shanks. Pull a holder, read the flange, and say whether the machine runs BT50 or CAT 50 tooling.
  • Head travel over the table. The sheet gives 0 to 2,540 mm from the table top to the spindle center. Run the head to the bottom and the top of its travel and measure both from the table.
  • Spindle nose to table center. The sheet puts the spindle nose 609.6 mm from the table center at its closest and 2,133.6 mm at its farthest. Move the axes to bring the table center nearest to the nose and then farthest from it, and measure both.
  • Six table clamps. Toshiba Machine's 1999 release counts six hydraulic clamps on the table in this series. Index the table to a few positions and confirm it clamps at each one with no alarm.
  • R22 or P45 on the plate. The 2004 chart lists a BP-150.P45 with the same 5.9 spindle entry and a 70 x 180 table. Read the full model off the plate, suffix included.
