What the maker publishes about the current Tsugami FMA3-III

Tsugami's FMA3-III horizontal machining center stores its pallets in a vertical-loop pallet system that stays resident on the machine. Every pallet carries a binary device that the control reads without touching it, then calls up that pallet's program and tooling. Pallets measure 11.75 by 11.75 inches, and changing one takes 9.0 seconds. Axis strokes read 14.17 x 13 x 15.75 inches (X, Y, Z), and all three rapid at 994 IPM. A 10 HP motor drives the spindle across 200 to 15,000 rpm. The tool changer works in 1.0 second tool to tool and 5.0 seconds chip to chip. Options include magazines for 62, 126 or 190 tools, a 20 pallet magazine, through-spindle coolant, a chip conveyor and an automatic centering function, and a full rotary B axis can be fitted. The bed is vertical, with chips and coolant kept away from it. A Fanuc 18i-MB runs the machine, which weighs 11,500 kg and measures 4040 mm wide, 2485 mm deep and 2740 mm high.

What the Tsugami FMA3-III is used for

Tsugami America's current page sets the FMA3-III up for unattended and semi-attended runs from its resident pallet pool, naming chip disposal and heat dispersion as the two problems it was laid out to solve, and says the FMA3 line has been through five generations of upgrades.

What fits a Tsugami FMA3-III

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Pallets and fixturing

Fixtures, tombstones and spare pallets are cut for a pallet of this size and do not transfer to another machine. On a horizontal they are a large share of what is being sold, so count them before quoting.

What to check on a Tsugami FMA3-III

  • Control generation. The manufacturer specifies Fanuc 18i-MB CNC for this model. Units we have tracked run 2009 to 2010; an early one may carry an older control or a retrofit.
  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 200 – 15,000 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 10 HP of spindle power. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 14.17”, Y 13” and Z 15.75” of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 994 IPM. Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Tool-change time. The manufacturer gives a tool-to-tool time of 1.0 sec. and a chip-to-chip time of 5.0 sec.. Time a tool change against that.
  • Pallet changer. The manufacturer gives a pallet size of 11.75” x 11.75”. Run a full pallet change, and count the pallets and fixtures that come with the machine.
  • Rigging and floor. The manufacturer gives a machine weight of 11,500 kg and a floor space of 4040 x 2485 x 2740 mm (W x D x H). Confirm the rigging route and the floor will take that.
