Haas groups the TL-1 with its TL Series toolroom lathes: a CNC turning machine with X and Z axes, programmed through a conversational system so no G-code is needed. Swing measures 20.0 in over the front apron and 11.0 in over the cross slide. Working from the tool post, the lathe cuts parts up to 16.0 in across and 30.0 in long, while a 4-station turret limits diameter to 8.0 in. Distance between centers is 30.0 in. The X axis moves 8.00 in, the Z axis 30.00 in, and both rapid at 450 ipm. Nose type is A2-5, on a belt-driven spindle of 10.0 hp that tops out at 1800 rpm. Peak torque is 108.0 ft-lbf, reached at 355 rpm. The spindle bore is 2.30 in, and the headline bar capacity reads 2.3 in. An 8.0 in chuck is optional. It accepts three-phase or single-phase supply, though single-phase operation is ruled out in Europe.

• Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 1800 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
• Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 7.5 kW (10.0 hp) of spindle power and 146.0 Nm @ 355 rpm (108.0 ft-lbf @ 355 rpm) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
• Spindle nose. The manufacturer gives a spindle nose of A2-5. Check that the chuck fitted to it runs true.
• Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 203 mm (8.00 in) and Z 762 mm (30.00 in) of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.

• Chuck and bar. The manufacturer gives a chuck size of 203 mm (8.0 in) (optional). Check the jaws and the grip pressure.
• Bed and ways. The manufacturer gives a max turning diameter of 406 mm (16.0 in) (with tool post) or 203.0 mm (8.0 in) (with 4-station turret) and a max turning length of 762 mm (30.0 in) (with tool post) or 42.0 mm (1.65 in) (with 8-station turret). Check the ways for wear near the chuck.
