What the maker publishes about the current Haas ST-30

Among Haas ST Series turning centers, the ST-30 takes a 10.0 in chuck and bar up to 3.00 in. Haas describes its footprint as medium. The spindle has an A2-6 nose and a 3.50 in bore; its rating is 30.0 hp, with a top speed of 3400 rpm. Torque reaches 300.0 ft-lbf at 500 rpm. With the optional gearbox fitted, the figure becomes 1000 ft-lbf at a spindle speed of 150 rpm. Z travel is 32.50 in and X travel 9.40 in; each rapids at 945 ipm. The maximum cut length, subject to workholding, is 32.5 in, matching the greatest span between centers. With a BOT turret the cutting diameter reaches 15.00 in; with BMT65, 13.75 in. Maximum part swing is 21.0 in. Tools mount in a 12-station BOT turret. The coolant reservoir takes 55 gal.

What the Haas ST-30 is used for

Haas points the ST-30, the medium-footprint model of its ST Series turning centers, at long production runs of turned parts, and says it laid out the whole series from the start around setup changes and around holding size as the machine warms.

What fits a Haas ST-30

Each of these follows from a published specification above, which is named beside it.

Workholding

A 10-inch chuck. Jaw sets, soft jaws and collet chucks for this size are commodity items, but the chuck itself, and any spare jaws, travel with the machine and are counted in an offer.

Derived from Chuck size: 254 mm (10.0 in)

Bar feeder fit

Bar capacity is 76 mm, so a bar feeder for this machine has to be sized for stock up to that diameter.

Derived from Bar capacity: 76 mm (3.00 in)

What to check on a Haas ST-30

  • Spindle. The manufacturer gives a spindle speed of 3400 rpm. Run the spindle to top speed and listen for bearing noise.
  • Spindle load. The manufacturer gives 22.4 kW (30.0 hp) of spindle power and 407.0 Nm @ 500 rpm (300.0 ft-lbf @ 500 rpm) of spindle torque. Take a heavy cut and watch the load meter.
  • Spindle nose. The manufacturer gives a spindle nose of A2-6. Check that the chuck fitted to it runs true.
  • Axes and way covers. The manufacturer gives X 239 mm (9.40 in) and Z 826 mm (32.50 in) of travel. Run each axis end to end and check the way covers.
  • Rapids and ballscrews. The manufacturer gives a rapid traverse of 24.0 m/min (945 ipm). Measure the backlash on each axis.
  • Turret. The manufacturer gives the turret stations as 12-Station BOT. Index every station and time a full turn.
  • Chuck and bar. The manufacturer gives a chuck size of 254 mm (10.0 in) and a bar capacity of 76 mm (3.00 in). Check the jaws and the grip pressure; check any bar feeder is set for that bar.
  • Bed and ways. The manufacturer gives a max turning diameter of 381 mm (15.00 in) (with BOT turret) or 349 mm (13.75 in) (with BMT65 turret) and a max turning length of 826 mm (32.5 in) (varies with workholding). Check the ways for wear near the chuck.
  • Second spindle. The manufacturer gives a sub-spindle: max speed of 4100 rpm. Check that it synchronizes on a part transfer.
