Makino's a51nx is a four-axis horizontal machining center in the company's nx series, working on 400 x 400 mm pallets. Axis strokes are 560 mm in X and 640 mm in both Y and Z. The fourth axis is a direct-drive B-axis fitted as standard. Roller-type linear guides carry the moving axes, which accelerate at 1G. Rapid traverse is 60,000 mm/min, with cutting feed up to 50,000 mm/min. The spindle comes from Makino's own spindle factory and runs to 14,000 rpm, with a 20K option. Taper is CAT40, and HSK-63 is the alternative. The standard magazine holds 60 tools, and 40, 134, 219 or 311 pockets are optional. A tool change takes 0.9 seconds tool to tool and 2.2 seconds chip to chip. Tools up to 430 mm long, 170 mm across and 12 kg fit the changer. The work envelope takes parts up to ∅ 630 mm x 900 mm and 400 kg. Control is the Pro6, which runs Process Tracer from the Makino iKnowledge software set.
