Mold making and tool and die work are the stated targets of the Haas VM Series, and the VM-3 is a three-axis vertical mill in that family. X travel is 40.00 in, Y is 26.00 in and Z is 25.00 in. Its multi-fixturing table measures 54.0 in by 24.0 in, carries 13 T-slots in the Y direction and 6 in the X direction, and is rated for 4000 lb. Power comes from a 30.0 hp inline direct-drive spindle that runs to 12000 rpm and takes CT or BT 40 holders. A side-mount changer carries 30+1 tools, averaging 2.80 s between tools. Tools up to 2.5 in across fill every pocket, and 5.0 in tools fit when the neighboring pockets stay empty. Each axis rapids at 710 ipm. The Haas control runs high-speed machining with full look-ahead. A programmable coolant nozzle and an automatic air gun are standard.
